ive been configing for awhile and noticed that i can get a ddr2 system with a 780i mb and 800mhz of ram and a ddr3 system with a 790i mb and 1330mhz of ram for roughly the same price. now is the ddr3 the way to go now? and what is really the big diff with ddr3? is that a good choice to go to kinda future proof my computer...meaning i wont need to upgrade my ram or mb for a long time.

Your mobo will be obsolete when Nehalem comes out in Q4 08.
DDR3 consumes 1.5v compared to DDR2's 1.8v consumption. DDR3 can achieve much higher speeds but has higher latency than DDR2. I believe the fastest DDR3 ram currently sits at ~2200MHz whereas the fastest DDR2 sits at ~1300MHz. |

Ive been going though this debate myself for quite a while now. Im not too worried about Nehalem, As i havent worried about all the other new tech since i last bought my computer, so ill be content with what i get now until the 4-6 years rolls around and i have to get another new computer.
I think im gonna go with DDR3, just to make sure im fairly future proofed because DDR3 can only get better....As ive been reading, DDR2 is near its limits on how far it can be produced.
And the lower voltage is good as well..not major but good..as that should mean its producing a bit less heat. Even if its not a lot anyways, its still a bonus.

I think the reason we are all saying stuff toward nehalem is because once that comes out that is gonna be the platfrom for a good while say a year or two and it will make pretty much what ever is around now obsolete, its gonna have a whole new archetucture and much faster. I don't wait around for stuff for 9 month unless there is damn good reason for it. If it was not for nehalem I would be sporting a skulltrail or a workstation.
damn you nehalem lollll |

GPUs use a lot more bandwidth then a CPU.
ATI is rumored to be using GDDR5 in their upcoming cards. |

so how does ati know what the specs are for ddr4 and ddr5? when no one uses ddr4 and 5 yet. sounds like they are desperate. oh look at us use cards that have ddr4... but they still fall behind nvidia. am i right with that?

GDDR5 specs were finalized last year and Samsung just started mass producing them this year.
AMD and ATI has always been ahead of Intel and Nvidia in terms of technology. There's actually really little difference between GDDR3 and GDDR4. Nvidia's cards with GDDR3 are clocked at like 1100MHz and ATI's GDDR4 cards are also clocked at 1100MHz... GDDR5 is suppose to debut at 2400MHZ which is a huge difference... ATI has only failed this generation to offer performance so I don't see why that's a big deal. |

The time of purchase, what you'll be using it for, hardware/software compatibility and performance margins all play a factor in purchasing.
