Now I was thinking about purchasing a new computer, I'm sick of upgrading the old one and want to start over fresh. So I have two different builds in mind, the only difference is the ram. One of them running 4GB of DDR3 Corsair Dominator at 1600 MHz the other running 4GB of DDR2 Corsair Dominator at 1066MHz. What is the difference I mean the higher frequency stands out first and foremost but besides that I'm clueless. If you want to see the build just ask for the link.

I dont know much details, but i think the main differences are the speed as you can tell. Other differences are that DD3 uses less power. I believe it uses stock 1.5V. I suppose that maybe means more room for overclocking and also means less heat generated though memory really isnt the major producer of heat. |

The primary difference is more bandwidth.
The modules do use less power, which means less heat, and the latencies are higher than DDR2, but at the speeds DDR3 operates at, it really doesn't matter. DDR2 is more than sufficient for today's applications. DDR3 is a bit of future proofing, and should be kinder to memory controllers because of the lower power requirements. |

DDR3 overclocks better - OK I'm still learning and confused about exactly overclocking memory.
First simple question. Does ther FSB control the overclocking.
if so, would running ddr3 @1200 and running ddr2 @1200 transfer faster.
I see they are advertising ddr3 @1800, but I believe that todays better motherboards are rated @1400.
Is the extra money for ddr3 worth putting in a system without overclocking? Or do you have crap shoot that your sytem will overclock better with it?
reading what I just wrote, yep I'm confused.

If both DDR2 and DDR3 ram were at the same speed, the DDR2 ram would be faster because it would have lower latency.
The limit on DDR2 ram is ~1300. DDR3 can support much higher speeds (up to ~2300). DDR3 does not work on DDR2 motherboards and vice versa. DDR3 overclocks better because it can achieve much higher speeds for less voltage than DDR2. |

skyR thanks. I guess the bottom line is "DDR3 is the future" |
