Topic: DDR3 RAM Posted: 23 Sep 2008 at 4:54pm |
Can anyone tell me if the memory has to match the processor in mhz ?
Fro example I am interested in the intel 9550 rated at 1333 mhz ... can I buy RAM with a value of 1600 mhz .. or will this cause "bottlenecking" ??

you can but its pointless, the extra speed can't be used, the ram speed you can use it locked to your FSB, only time you can use that is if in OC.
so the best thing to do is match it to FSB, then OC both cp and ram for more speed. |

On the chart for the graphics card, why do the cards that have SLI after them perform better ... is this referring to more than one in tandem ? I wanted to get the gtx 260, but one is far up on the chart and the other doesn't look so good. can you explain ? |

ok I changed your HDD to a faster one, if you don't want teh 300GB velociraptor then please go with the 150GB digital raptor, its a shame to skip out on the faster drives.
changed your liquid cooling to a better one. your case is very important with your setup the haf is what you want, great air and great liquid cooling. changed your ram to OCZ cause corsair has been crapping out. do you like messing with controls? LCD and fans? here you go Ticket# 186404 --- Price: $3061 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis: Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache) Motherboard: nVidia 790i Ultra Core 2 Quad (nForce 790i Ultra SLI) (DDR3 Only) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz OCZ Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive 1: 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor (10K RPM) (16MB Cache) (Extreme Speed) Hard Drive 2: 500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Raid Option: - No Thanks Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Wireless Access: D-Link Wireless-G 108Mbps (Supports 802.11g/b) Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896MB (Includes PhysX Technology) TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: Liquid Chilled FrostBite CPU Only Internal Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Blue Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Modifications: LCD Temperature Display & Fan Controller Boost Processor: Yes, Overclock the processor as much as possible with complete stability Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: Yes, Overclock memory timings (Includes Memory Fan Kit Installed) Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks my keyboard comes with a mouse External Storage: - No Thanks Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty Edited by DST4ME - 23 Sep 2008 at 8:19pm |

I thought it would be ok to use the slower 250 gig drive for the OS and use the 300 velociraptor for the games ... agree or no ? |

You always want the fastest drive for the OS, thus why I picked you the 300GB, you can have your games and OS on that one if you like.
all media/personal files go to the second drive |

I'm going to have a second tower set up where everything else can go ... this pc is only going to be for gaming and maybe some video editing and viewing, but not much. The on-board sound should be ok I thought because I found myself mainly using headphones for gaming over the years anyways. So, as you are saying ... the games and the os would be ok on the same drive .... ? |

not sure what you mean but the haf got plenty of room for liquid cooling and other things, its lots better then the antec. trust me you can't go wrong with the haf.
if you have a second pc setup then do you need a second hdd on this one? if not drop the second hdd Edited by DST4ME - 23 Sep 2008 at 8:38pm |

lol OK I will try,
see the things below? you are not getting any of them lol see how roomy and liquid cooling friendly it is? it also has places for cable and such so it would be nice, clean, open setup with great air flow. Edited by DST4ME - 23 Sep 2008 at 9:03pm |

LOL! DST, you must be on Coolermaster's payroll!
You're really pushing the HAF! Sure, it's a good design, but not perfect like you seem to make it sound. It still utilises non-standard sized fans (I wonder how hard it will be to replace the oversized 230mm fans if they go out. Who carries them?). I'm not convinced that four 120mm fans on the side would be a great replacement considering all the noise and extra power draw. The chassis is made of steel and plastic, which not all admire. Some people want a solid aluminum case and like being able to easily replace parts that wear out. Just some things that the other side of the fence sees. ( I do like the case, but wish they had an aluminum model ). Edited by widdlecat - 24 Sep 2008 at 5:54am |

I don't think haf is perfect but its the best we have, I don't see how with haf its not easy to replace parts, are you talking about the case parts?
it does state that you can change the fans to the normal ones, but unless you need to then why bother, and if you need to then its very easy and cheap. I also like to point out TL's argument:

Jumped into this late, so sorry if this got mentioned.
To get best performance with your RAM, you want it running with a 1:1 ratio to the FSB.
Intel FSB are "quad pumped", so assuming a 1600 MHz FSB you get (1600 / 4 = 400 MHz)
DDR2 RAM is dual channel, so to find the best RAM for a FSB, you take your FSB Speed and double it (400 MHz * 2 = 800 MHz).
So, assuming the maximum FSB speed is 400Mhz (1600 Quad Pumped), the "best" RAM would be DDR2 800.
For a FSB Speed of 333.25 (1333 Quad Pumped), the "best" RAM would be DDR2 667 (technically, 666.5).
Benches have shown that DDR2 667 running on a FSB of 333.25 will beat the same amoung of DDR2 800 RAM.
DDR3 does end up being faster, due to its faster speed, but the notice is minimal. Nehalem/i7 should see a better use of DDR3 due to the onboard memory controller, instead of relieing on a link to the FSB,
Hope this helps :D
