Just about any brandname display will do. Samsung, Dell, Nec, Planar, Eizo Nanao just to name a few. Basically just look for high contrast ratio, brightness and low response times. Better monitor usually cost more

Response times is the most important for a gaming monitor. The lower the number, the better. Anywhere between 2ms and 6ms are excellent.
Contrast ratio is the most important for a movie monitor. The higher the number, the better. If you have a room where you can control the light, you want a high contrast ratio. If you have a room where you can't control the light, anything above 400:1 is fine (human eye can only see ~500:1 when it is not completely dark). Each manufacturer measures contrast differently so do not base your decision on this. There is also static and dynamic contrast ratios. Static is the low numbers (1000:1) while dynamic contrast is the higher numbers (3000:1), both equally good so do not be fooled. Brightness shouldn't matter since most LCDs are too bright nowadays =\ |

Two great 24in monitors to look at are the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP and HP w2408. I own them both and they are both great monitors. HP monitor has a glossy screen ( Like on the apple i-macs ). Some may not like this type of screen because its has more of a glare than the matte screens in highly lighted rooms. Like i said both are great monitors....hope that helps.

I have a half of a recommendation for you, the Hanns-G 28" is a great price and has very good specs as well, including a 3ms response time. I bought one based on discussions here and the reviews I read online. As soon as I get home from work today I'm hooking up my new DSO system which arrived while I was out of town this week, and perhaps then I can give you the other half of the review based on its actual operation...

I have recently purchased the Samsung SyncMaster 226bw and it completely blew me away...I had bought a 7600GS 512mb nVidia graphics card and was very unsatisfied with it...the addition of this monitor made a huge quality of picture increase...so I bought my wife one too...cant wait to see how my newly ordered Digital Storms system look on it.

I actually am looking at getting a new monitor in the next few weeks, and my decision has come down to either the 226BW, or the Dell 20" Ultrasharp widescreen. 22" is about as big as I want, a 24" just seems too big for me - I wouldn't be able to take it all in without looking around all the time.
Since they both run at the same native res (1680x1050), but the Dell is smaller (and has a smaller dot pitch), isn't it much sharper? I wouldn't mind being on a 20" if the image is significantly better. However, there seems to be some consensus that the Samsung is one of the best screens around. Any thoughts on what the difference would be? Right now I'm leaning towards the 226BW. Any thoughts? Chris |

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!!
I feel like I'm headed toward the 226BW, it just has the best all around features for the price. I do have another question that someone might be able to help with. I see from the spec sheet on the 8800 ULTRA that it has 2 DVI-I outputs. Most of the monitors i'm looking at seem to have a DVI-D input. This may seem a little amateurish, but are the two compatible? Or do I need to look for a monitor with a DVI-I input?
Thanks for the help.. y'all are real nice....

DVI-I is just a analog/digital connector -- i just means that the video card output is compatible with both dvi-i and dvi-d. DVI-D is just a digital only connector. You'll be fine, just get a dvi to dvi cable (should be included with the monitor). More info can be found here : http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/dvi_info.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI Edited by commast - 26 Oct 2007 at 5:34pm |

I just picked up a second 24" Samsung (245bw). I really like these. I jsut wish I could get dual monitor support in vista.
(I mean, gaming. Like FSX, utilizing both monitors as one).

I just picked up a Samsung 245bw today. I hooked it up to my current, store-bought system and, WOW!! JUst the change from d-sub to DVI cable and the resolution change made my graphics look much better! I can't even fathom how good its going to be on my DS system with all the levels jacked to the sky... Thanks alot, Kelly and others for steering me in the right direction...

Go for an hp 24 inch... extremely good price and it looks good too. Also has a low response time which is good, and the highest res is 1900 by 1200

Well, after a week of playing MOA Airborne, Battlefield 2142, World in Conflict Command & Conquer 3 and Bioshock (but not FEAR) on the 28" Hanns-g HG281D at 1920 X 1200 I have to give it two thumbs up and a beer.
You may not be looking at a monitor this large, but for anyone even thinking of the Dell 30" this thing costs less than many 24" LCD monitors, looks GREAT, and I don't think I could go back to a CRT if I had to. Just check out what everyone is saying on Newegg or CNet forums about them. |

Bfrank2me, didn't you get that one at Bestbuy? I seen one at bestbuy and they say the thing goes to a resolution of 2500 x something. I thought the only way you could get such a high resolution was if you had 2 monitors?

Sounds like something the highly trained staff at that M&B might say, but no, the resolution is 1920 X 1200, full 1080p. It has 3ms response time and 800:1 contrast ratio. It also has both HDMI and DVI connectors and comes with all the adaptors to fit any output from almost any GPU you could think of.
Works for me, your mileage may vary. |
