A friend of mine who has her quirks in bringing up technological insights about stuff every now and then.
She brought up something about LCDs "sucking" in general due to burn-in for LCDs. I'm not sure how credible or how old her statements are considering she gets all this stuff from the TV (and not from the internet lol) Supposedly DLPs have supposedly "taken over the market" or "beaten LCDs" since there's a large sale for DLPs compared to LCDs. (True or false, the question is when have this occured and how long has it stayed that way.) I'm pretty sure LCDs have already been designed to deal with the burn-in issue. Aside from that, no matter how you look at it, having the need to replace a blasted light bult is a rather annoying turn off for me. (I mean, DLP Projectors sounds better than a DLP TV, in fact uhhh, projectors meant for Home Theater Systems are literally DLP Projectors right?) Edit: Strictly speaking it's really just about DLP vs LCD, and which marketed better supposedly, and the burn-in issue. Plasma wasn't really brought up, even then LCD and Plasma are sorta like step brothers anyway. Edited by Axel Daemon - 07 Oct 2008 at 7:21pm |

well first off projectors and TVs are not the same ofcourse, (LCD, DLP, plasma) will have better picture then projectors.
DLP has been out for a good few years now and it is suppose to be better then LCD but again the difference is not that big, laser TVs will kill LCD and DLP, also as far as I know DLP has been doing good in the TV market and not monitor market. projectors can be what ever, they will have 1080p also but still it does not mean it will look better then your 1080p plasma or DLP or LCD
burn-in can happen in any of those TVs, it just takes a good while. |

All of them have disadvantages and advantages, just depends on the user.
DLP is the most affordable but you can't hang them on walls. You have to change the lightbulb every now and than in exchange for picture quality staying strong. Plasma is big and expensive. Picture quality degrades over time. You can mount them on walls, they offer the best viewing angles. Not suitable for rooms where light can't be controlled. LCD is affordable and comes in sizes smaller than Plasma. Is suitable for brightly lighted rooms. Picture quality degrades, blahblah, basically a plasma. Burn-in is really rare... it won't happen unless you leave it on the news channel for days -.- |

Plasmas do just fine in rooms where light can't be controlled. light up high it looks great, lights low it looks great, you can adjust your monitor if needed to match the lighting.
the only problem with plasmas is that if you run it for 16 hours a day, you will lose quality after 3 years and after 4 or 5 you will need to replace it. LCD and plasma are both same sizes, in screens (42", 50", 60"0 but when it comes to the size of the actual set the LCD is the bigger one, not the plasma.

I have had plasmas, since they first came out, the first round were crap, my first one lost image quality after a year and a half, but each generation got better, right now pio kuro elite is king of plasmas, my current pio elite has been working 16 to 18 hours a day everyday and its been 2 years and its still going like a champ.
I wouldn't recommend plasmas as monitors tho, they are the best TV IMO. |

My 2 cents: I live in Colorado at an altitude of 6800'. Plasmas have an audible buzz at this altitude.
The rest of what needs to be said about the pros/cons of each technology has already been said. |

this was a few years back but in my experience with a very good group of home theater guys as long as u dont cheap out on the projector its def a great way to go. Im talking about not buying ANYTHING u see in a place like best buy/most online retailers were talking top of the line home theater stuff |

I probably wouldn't bother with a projector unless I had the money for a dedicated HT room with a good, controllable light system installed, surround system integrated into the walls, specialized seating, specialized multiple screens for 1 to 1.33, 1.78, 2.35, etc. (I guess I'll just have to watch Ben Hur with black bands above and below the frame, LOL). But if I did have the money and space I'd go projector at least once to see how the experience compares in a dedicated room situation.
That being said, I love my 60" Kuro with an old Bose system 5.1 surround in my smallish Condo LR. Works for me and the picture is spectacular. I could do a dedicated HT in my finished basement but that's where I keep my 2 PC's and setups for FSX, and workout gear. Oh well.
Had it about 9 months, no burn in issues and I watch a fair share of 1 to 1.33 programing and movies. Plus, they have an integrated "eraser" program, can't remember what it's called. Set it to run when you go to bed once in a while, it runs a white vertical band running from top to bottom of the screen from left to right which neutralizes any pixels thay may be getting "stuck"(?). Not sure of the technicalia here. But it runs for an hour and then turns off the set on its own. No problems.
Bottom line, the only way I'd go LCD is if Plasma didn't exist. I've always found comparable quality/price Plasmas (versus LCD's) to look better to my eyes. Edited by FLighT - 08 Oct 2008 at 1:25pm |

like the poster above said this was a dedicated HT room and the bulb life for projectors arent the best. Unless this was a dedicated HT room i would sooner get the LCD. |
