In the past they definitely seemed to but it seems the sound card market is not as booming as it used to be. Many games don't support EAX and I've heard sound is done all in software rendering in Vista.
Would going from Realtek onboard audio to say a X-Fi XtremeGamer make that big a difference? Would everything sound somewhat better or only things with EAX support?

Yeah if you have a nice set of cans (headphones
) or a good speaker set up it's definitely worth it to buy a nice sound card. If you don't you're not going to see much benifit. You wouldn't put lawnmower wheels on a Ferrari would you? |

Doesn't one of the new motherboards come with some sort of a sound card on it already?

Along these same lines, if you spend $3500 or more on a rig, it's kinda outta place to not have discrete audio, IMO. A rig like that is likely to have a good speaker and headphone set up going with it. If you love music, you may find that even with a budget system, you will want to upgrade your audio. My system is sub-$1000, and yet if I had a couple hundred dollars available, I would get an auzentech or asus card. Granted, my speakers are much better than most high-end rigs are using, and I have the home audio gear lying around to set up a serious stereo for my pc. Get some Grado headphones for music and even the budget ones will allow you to hear the difference between onboard sound and entry level sound cards. |
