Can someone educate me on sata 2 and sata 3; what uses them, etc...

I am a bit clueless in this area.

Thanks!

SATA 6Gb/s (3) is just a newer and faster interface than SATA 3Gb/s (2). Anything that ran on SATA 3Gb/s will run just fine on SATA 6Gb/s.

just to simplify:

sata 2.0 = 3Gb/s transfer speeds.

sata 3.0 = 6Gb/s transfer speeds, its backward compatible with sata 2.0.

sata is the protocal used to transfer data between your drives and other parts, like drive to drive, drive to mobo, and etc, drives can be your hard drive (hdd/ssd) for example that connect to the motherboard or your media drives (dvd/cd/bluray) that connect to the mobo.

Did we clear it up for you? if not then please ask questions

I had figured out the transfer speed aspect but was not clear on backwards compatible or if all ssd use the 6gb speed. I think I get it now.

I might be able to afford a ssd in my new computer since I am waiting for the sandy bridge fix.

Any advice on using a 240 gb corsair ssd as the primary drive?

For ssds go with intel, they have the best reliability and etc.

some ssds are sata 2.0 and some are 3.0 but I don't know of any that will overload sata 2.0 yet, unless in raid.

Ok, Intel has good ssd. So...I can save money on my config with 160gb intel in place of 240gb corsair..thats good.

But is 160gb enough for a primary drive for os and games? Maybe.

I'll have to learn how to not accumulate useless stuff on my hard drive.

160Gb is pretty decent size, will hold OS and a good amount of games, a 1Tb hard drive to store music, video's' ect would be a wise choice. I have a lot of games right now on the Drunken Monkey and have a lot of space free, I have 320Gb of SSD right now, and I will have to check when I get home, but I think it is right at 1/2 full.

Keep in mind, once the 160GB get full you can add another ssd as HDD3 and continue to put games on it.

Sure...if I have the money and overcome my natural laziness to install it!

Right now the plan is to get a 160gb intel ssd, and a 1tb cavier hd

I do have the skills to install a new hard drive later. The cash? not so certain.

But that would be down the road, by that time, prices are lower and sizes are bigger, you may even endup getting a bigger and faster ssd and using that as HDD1, and pushing the current 160GB to HDD3.

installing hdd/ssd is one of the easiest and quickest thing you do, the formating is what takes the longest, otherwise it takes 2 minutes to install.

Another question:

I only use my pc for games, and I do like to play on 2560x1600 whenever possible...sooo..

for the same price I could not have a ssd at all, but add a second 6970.

Based on my assumptions that would be better for game performance, where the ssd is more for loading time performance.?

You're correct. Perhaps take a look at intel's 3rd generation SSD's coming out within a few months.

If you are gaming at 2560 x 1600 then more vram is good, so its either two 580 with 1.5GB of vram or two 6970 with 2GB of vram, one look at the price and the choice is simple, cf 6970.

if after that ssd is not in the budget, then add ssd later, gpu power here is more important then ssd, first thing is to get good enough fps for the games at your res, then second is the ssd and all the goodies it brings, keep in mind its important to balance the power, so as soon as you get a chance, drop in one of those gen 3 intels that will be out soon.

Ok, so I have been trying to get a feel for the powersupply requirements for 2 6970's, and a 1000 watt seems to be enough. If I understand power supplies at all, 1000 watt really means 800 watt, and the two 6970's use about 500 total.
So would you go with a 1000wcorsair for 2 6970's?

And, Are there any issues with crossfire that would make me want to just use one gpu instead even if my performance is not the best possible?

Thanks!

cf/sli have driver bugs but it depends on the game, not all games suffer, and its not the same games, some get fixed and some new ones develop a problem, its best you check the games you want to play and go to their forum and see if cf/sli users are reporting any problems, we don't keep up with th bugs to be able to tell you which game and what and etc, for the most part you should be ok with no problems, unless of the games you play has bugs with cf or sli.

1000w corsair plenty for cf 6970.
