So this may be the question I'm not supposed to ask as I'm aware overclocking is a specialty of DS.  I enjoy playing games but I am by no means a hard core gamer.  I played Crysis on my current Dell Pent. 4 -not at high settings of course but it was still enjoyable.  I'm looking to buy a DS system with i7 920 and dual GTX 275 cards, so if i replay Crysis i'm expecting a completely different experience.  That said, it seems Crysis is the outlier when it comes to demanding games.  I digress...

My question is, is overclocking necessary?  Am I wrong to assume a regular i7 920 with the dual 275 cards would be able to easily handle most of the games out there at high settings (a game like Half Life 2 comes to mind)?

Thanks

Necessary? No, not at all. But it will make your computer run much faster and there really is no reason not to get an overclock, especially when you are guaranteed at least 3.33ghz (which is the speed of the $1000 i7 chips) for much much less.

But, again, no, it's not necessary. Half Life 2 at high settings can be achieved with MUCH less than an i7 and dual 275s.

Any particular reason you wouldn't want an overclock?

Primary reason would be cost.  the overclock cost is not that much, maybe 50, but it then requires the more expensive cooling option which run around 140 i think.

If you're planning dual 275's you may want a beefier cooling option anyway, keep the processor cooler. Seriously though, a cooler is NOT the place to be looking to do budget cutbacks. That's like buying a porsche and getting a Thermos as a radiator...

games like crysis will put your cpu under load also and you will benefit from the cpu cooler even without oc.
