I have been lurking the forums for a while now, as I saved my pennies for a new system. I want to say thank you to all the regulars for the education and advice I have gotten along the way, with a special shout-out to DST4ME and justin.kerr.DST saved me money on exotic nonesense, and justin convinced me overclocking is not just for crazy folk.
I pulled the trigger today, because my power supply gave it up. The problem I have is all the stuff I've got on my old IDE drive is now inaccessible. I know it can be retrieved, but I was wondering if y'all would like to advise me as to the easiest/cheapest way to go about it.

 Many thanks.

got a staples nearby?

http://www.staples.com/I-O-Magic-USB-2.0-Enclosure-for-3.5-Hard-Drive/product_643061?storeId=10001&jspStoreDir=Staples&cmSearchKeyword=IDE+drive+enclosure&fromUrl=home&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&cmArea=SEARCH&ddkey=StaplesSearch

i have one myself, IDE -> USB ^^

once you're done with it, y not do something else with it while it's still in the enclosure? backup, use as a mobile HDD, etc.

if you need an external enclosure to put it in then get this one, cause it does bothy sata and idea and transfers with both usb or esata and its the same price practically as the one ablah has posted.

now what mobo did you get with your system? cause there are other ways of doing it without an external enclosure.

Thanx DST, it does make more sense I get an enclosure that can switch hit, and they are both reasonably priced. I ordered the EVGA X58 LE. I knew you guys would come thru for me!

Well listen, first off you know that if that HDD has windows on it, you will not be able to boot to that HDD anymore, however you can look at the contents and grab any of your files and etc you needed.

now you don't need to get an enclosure, you can just get an ide to sata adapter and when the new pc get there just connect this ide drive as HDD2 or HDD3.

Thanks. I think I'm leaning toward the enclosure solution so I will be able to clone my DS HDD per your tutorial, which I also thought was well advised. (NOT to the IDE drive, of course, that thing is 8yrs old for Pete's sake.)
BTW, I see the tutorial has gone away, is that because you  posted that gorgeous piece of artwork instead? You must be very pleased.

I removed the link to the guide cause our sigs don't have much room here, I was gonna talk to Alex or Jason about it, I think a little more room is ok and not a big deal.

clone guide 2.0 you can follow my clone guide here its new and improved.

but you don't need to clone anything, unless you want to save the ide to use on the old pc still, if not then you just install the ide to external and then connect to pc, by doing so the mbr of the ide will be destroyed not letting you boot to windows from it again, however it will be able to be read and used as a second drive and all the data you have on it will be accessible, but you can't move programs and games that use regkeys, just media/work/personal files can be moved.

That's an important piece of info about the regkeys now being obsolete. It makes perfectly good sense, but I bet a lot of people like me just don't think that one through.Big%20smile Fortunately, I dont need anything off there but what remains accessible. (gamesaves and documents, mostly) The enclosure route, though, will allow me to get a SATA drive to backup/clone my new DS HDD as needed. Thanks for the link to your guide. And thanks for being so generous with your time. You da Man!
