My head is spinning....  I want good cooling, but I want quiet too.  Slade is advertised for quiet, Dreadnought (with HAF X case) for power and cooling.  I've seen posts that say the Dreadnought is quiet too.  What do I get, Slade or Dreadnought??

I want to spend 3-4k, my monitor is 26" 1920x1200, I play 1st person shooters (Arma, BF3, etc) and surf the web.  My last DS system was Jan 2009 and is still doing decent frame rates but I need to prepare for Arma3 in all its maxed out glory.

I want the system to last awhile.  I've always gone best bang for the buck, but I'm now 72 and retired so screw it....  spend some bucks.
  • video card:       TITAN for sure
  • cpu:                  probably i7 3930K overclocked???
  • MB                   ASUS Sabertooth X79 is default, but how about EVGA X79FTW
  • memory:          16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm (maybe 2133 or Corsair?)
  • power supply:  1050W Corsair
  • HD:                  240GB Solid State and 1TB Western Digital
  • Sound:             MB integrated.  Seems like that's the standard nowadays.
  • CPU cooling:   DS liquid or Air cool?????  Really confused on this.
  • T-shirt:             Med, Lrg or xtra Lrg (maybe I'll figure that out myself)
For the HAF X case, I saw a couple recommendations a few months ago that I thought I would do:
  • add a 200m non LED fan on top.
  • add a 1200 mm video card fan
Any feedback is appreciated.  I plan on ordering this week.  At 72 I don't wanna wait any longer.......

Hi gpcook...  Between the two cases I'd go Hafx( Dreadnought).  Much better cooling and it is pretty quiet.  The Slade, 550D,  is quieter as-is because its a closed up case with a acoustic panel top and on the side. Not as good air flow.  Its a personal choice for sure, so up to you as always.

Here's the same build for the same budget I showed a fellow forum member earlier.

You don't need the six core 3930k chip for gaming.  The 4 core 4770k will do great.  Lots of talk right now of the added heat from the new Haswell cpu, but with Stage 1 overclock and DS doing it right, not an issue.  Nothing wrong with the 3930k cpu.  It works just fine.

The Titan is an awesome card, but here I went with sli, 2x gtx 770 for better frames in the heavy shooters and doing it cheaper.  If you want to stick to a single card, and not sli, then the gtx 780 is 90% of the Titan's performance for 75% of the money.  The Titan is a nice card, just expensive for a little gain over other setups.  But, still the most powerful single gpu card.

I put in the Noctua D14 cooler.. Excellent cooler and quiet and very dependable.  Not much to go wrong.  If you want the Corsair H100i because its smaller then that works and has a good reputation.  I like the dependability of the air cooler, but your choice.  If you stick with Noctua you can have the second 200mm fan mounted on top.  The H100i fits up there so the stock 200mm fan is removed and no room for the second one.

Keep the ram at 1600Mz speed.  Cheaper, less heat and doesn't run the risk of messing with overclocking.  Plus the added speed you'll never see.

Just my thoughts and hope this helps.  Good Luck. Big%20Smile

some excellent points bprat, thanks.  The 4770 cpu sounds good, as does the Noctua cooler.  I'll keep the ram at 1600 as you suggest.  But I've got a real hair up my rear on the TITAN.  I've gotta have it!  This is so unlike me....

I did notice that you opted to select the non-default hard drives that are in the Level 3 Dreadnought build specs.  The DS default for SSD 240 is Corsair (you picked Samsung) and for the 1TB HD it's just plain Western Digital/Seagate, not Caviar.  Any reason?

The Titan is a nice card.     Don't blame you. I just try to get best bang for the buck.

The drives I just pick default usually but depends I guess.    Not sure if its me being lazy or just think they all work good.         The WD black hdd has a great reputatio and the Corsair and Intel ssd have a very good track record.    I usually let others do the drives.
