Topic: DS Laptop ReviewsPosted: 17 Nov 2009 at 12:19am |

I am going to buy a gaming laptop this week. I fly for a major airline and spend alot of time on the road. So I am looking for a great gaming laptop to help pass the time (when I am not flying, of course). I am looking at the Alienware mx15 and the DS 9280. I can find 100's of reviews on the Mx15 but nothing on DS 9280. Is there any reviews in any magazines? If anyone has one I would love to hear your opinion.
I have a DS desktop and I do like the US based customer service. Thanks ACE |

@Ace Zoot,
We haven't really pushed our laptops out in front of press and reviews as of now.
We are planning to, however, if you do purchase a laptop from us, you will get that same level of great service and support that you do with our Desktops.

Which is better a desktop i7 cpu or a i7 mobil cpu? Any real heat issues?

The i7 processors do run warmer in a laptop as it is a more powerful processor.

But for gaming i7is useless since it will be severely bottlenecked by the the single gtx 280m which is nothing like it's desktop counterpart since its basically a down clocked version the gtx 8800. Plus the insane power draw of the i7 mean's you'll be measuring you're battery life in minutes.
I would recommend going for the s17x with a fast dual core, and maybe asking them to throw in another gtx 280m (which I'm certain the chassis can hold). |

I have heard so many great things about the i7. So should I wait for the next video card? Maybe one from ATI? Or what is the best video card for a laptop?
Thanks,
Ace

i7 is great for gaming, but you need a good gpu to really push it along, having an i7 and a gtx 280m is kinda like having a world class jockey ride a mule.
Personally I don't think ATI will release its next gen mobile parts until Q2 of next year and Nvidia probably won't even have Fermi based gtx300m parts until maybe 2011. So unless you need an i7 for CAD or something, for gaming all you need to drive the gtx 280m is a fast dual core. Any faster/better cpu will basically cause a gpu bottleneck. Others offer 2 280m's or 2 4870's. That would make a great setup.

After shopping around I think I will just wait. The 280m does not sound all that great and for $3000 I thought I would be getting a hot rod. The Alienware with 280m x 2 sounds great but I HATE Dell. Their customer service is anything but that. I will never own a Dell again. So I guess I will wait until price matches the power.
Thanks all for your input. |

DS used to stock the Asus W90 which has 2 ati mobility 4870s which are basically downclocked 4750s. configured spec for spec the w90 turns out to be considerably cheaper than the m17x, but it's still stupidly expensive when you compare it to a desktop. But I suppose you just have to deal with inferior performance and high markups if you want the privalage of lugging around a 12 pound brick that can run new at a reasonable settings.

I have a killer desktop (from DS) but I travel alot! So I want a 12 lbs brick to help pass the time. So brick hunting I go.
