I think it would be really neat if DS had a section of recommended drivers for the hardware they supply.  Make a pinned topic on driver performance, features, issues, and tweaks.  I'm sure there are plenty of us who would be willing to add input and/or notify DS of new drivers or fixes.

Hmm, maybe they could even have an e-mail list to notify users when a new (stable, tested) driver is released for their system?  I've never trusted Windows Update..

So, I could go on further, but this is already material I had for the "DS World Domination" thread.  Wink

And drivers and updates that we should stay away from.

we just use the latest drivers that are on the company's websites.  Every Monday, one  of us logs on, downloads the latest drivers, burn them to disc and we use them.

Yes, Monstromo reiterated my point.  Do you guys test the drivers for performance differences?  It would be a big bonus (I think) if your customers had a centralized, up to date, informative resource for drivers.  Basically, this forum becomes a one-stop-shop (as it is fast becoming already).

I don't know, maybe this is a bigger fish than I think it is.  Although, that's why I mentioned that there are lots of us that would be able to test out drivers and submit information to DS for review and posting.  If you got some customers who were good tweakers, you could even have custom drivers.

Anyway, that's my brain talking pretty much..  Most of this hasn't been processed very long.

I was busy restoring my system yesterday and the day before and I tried some of the "hot fixes" and the latest creative driver for the X-Fi. I found that those hot fixes for Vista just made things considerably worse and the newest creative driver, and that program Alchemy just plain did not work and I ended up restoring again and dropping the hot fixes and leaving off the latest creative driver. Plus I did not install all the drivers available for my soundcard. I just did the bare minimum.

I think it would be great if DS made the drivers available for us on the website with the words:

Critical, recommended, use with caution, and avoid for now...

Also, pair them up the components.

You would probably cut down on the number techncial calls...

Of course, it is a big job to keep up with this stuff.

Just a thought.

Someone has really had a good idea here, I think. Maybe to lessen the load a bit, DS could simply have a spot on it's webpage someplace where a list of links to the drivers of the components they use in their machines, could be accessed? I could see how tedious it could become listing all the actual drivers to all those components (and then updating them) that go in to several different machines over a period of time. But maybe like just 'one component-one link' kind of thing, and let the user determine if he/she needs the latest driver? ( i.e., Nvidia.com for all Nvidia components DS uses in their machines). Just a thought. If it was in a forum setting, the users here would quickly develop thoughts and opinions on good verse bad drivers (IMO). What I really enjoy about DS's forum here is the abundance of good technical information that is shared by both DS' folks AND it's customers alike.

I like the idea of a thread for drivers, but I like the idea of a seperate forum section even more Big%20smile.

Set up some stickied indexes for hardware types and let cutomers post feedback with experiences they have with various release versions for drivers.

If DSO runs into a problem with something that's serious enough to warn people off an installation of a specific driver, that would be the place to post it, and to keep the workload for DSO to a minimum, it could be more of something customers post on with experiences with a specific driver set, rather than expecting DSO staff to benchmark every driver for every component they sell.

Some people really get into squeezing ~100 more CPU marks or 3d marks out of their system with various tweeks and driver choices. Giving them an outlet to share that work in a forum section would be very cool. Cool

This would also be a way for DSO to see if problems are developing with a particular driver set while the computer is in actual customer use. No matter how much testing you do before they ship, nothing beats realworld feedback. That seems pretty win-win to me. Wink
