This will be my second go around as last time I had to send my rig back because of a car accident and my insurance company decided to take it's time. I should be ordering within the week or early next week.

Only two things that I'm still thinking about is how many USB ports are available on the MOBO if I wanted to have a card reader?

And If I went with Vista and wanted to dual boot XP, where would be a good place to find a guide? As far as I know I would partition the harddrive and create a D:(guessing) for the XP? I would mainly be using XP so I would split the HD 100gb -XP/60gb- Vista.

1. You will lose 1 USB port. Only two of the four front USB ports will work, and the reader has 1, as the reader uses one of the USB headers.

2. I created 3 logical drives for my OS and used a second physical drive for my programs and storage. To do it on one drive, I would create 3 partitions. Probably 15GB for XP, 25GB for Vista, and 120GB for everything else.

So:
C: XP
D: Vista
E: Programs and Files

That's pretty much how I have my partitions/drives labeled, and it's worked well so far. You will want to label things with more than a letter btw. Your current OS always thinks it's on drive C. This can make for some confusion if you're looking for a saved file.

Glad to see you looking for a new rig! Thumbs%20Up

The Asus Maximus Formula looks to be a great board. From what I can see, it has three internal USB header ports. This will allow you to have the front USB port functionality and the card reader as well. The motherboard will have six USB ports in the back (http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1889&l1=3&l2=11&l3=572&l4=0).

Doing a dual boot is really easy. We actually have an internal guide, ask us for it when you are placing the order. It's recommended to install XP first and then Vista so that you can use the built-in Vista boot manager to select from both operating systems.

If you would like, we can do the entire dual booting for you, and install all of your drivers, etc on both operating systems. You can select "Dual Boot" from the drop down Windows OS box.

Ed, looks like you beat me to it! When I clicked reply, your response was not listed. Tongue

Wow, nice Mobo. I stand corrected Embarrassed. 5 USB ports up front including the card reader from the look of it on the Pro case.

Another piece of hardware to learn stats for.

Of course I'm coming back! I should be getting my insurance check this week and I need a good rig to last for awhile at a good price from a company that does it's best...

Excellent on the USB's, that was one of the only negative things about my first order.

Alex have you heard anything about if the Asus is as good as the 680A1 for OC'ing?

If I'm going to go ahead and do the dual-boot I'll have to go with Vista first because I already have a copy of XP from a friend ready to go. I've just been considering doing this because as useless as Vista seems it is the future for the next 2-3 years so I might as well have it, also incase it catches up and ever surpasses XP ;D, and since I have a free copy of XP I can just use that for gaming.

So I'd make 3 partitions, and when I turn on the computer It'd ask me which OS to boot up in?

Configuration is excellent and Tyler is right.

The Asus Maximus is a better board for overclocking. It features Intel's new X38 chipset and it does not have the annoying FSB holes like the NVIDIA 680i does.

Cr8ton, the future is pretty far off right now... a new socket is going to be used for native 45nm chips in 2008.

I think you can live with the 680i A1 with a Q6600 for a year before upgrading to a new motherboard supporting the native quad.
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

What  kind of OC has DSO been getting with this board?  Say with the 800/1066?

Purchased, put it on the credit card since I should be getting my refund this week hopefully.

Requested an extra fan to be put on the front side of the case so more cool air is put on all the goodies inside.

For the extra fan that I requested in the comments section, I received an email about it, was I to respond to it or will it be added into my order? I'd have to call since I believe it got deleted.

And I'm definitely keeping this thread alive so I can hear about the OC'ing! I didn't have that last time so it's kind of an extra treat.

You can install the fan itself, it's not hard Smile I install the extra fan after I received my DS PC since i want to choose a specific model instead of the generic type ( $10 ?) from DS.
