I'm in the middle of figuring out a system but considering the new cards are almost here, any news on when we can expect DS offering the 7970...or similar

The last I remember Alex said something like it would be at least a few weeks before they had the 7970 available. The thing to remember though is the 7970 has fall far short in terms of performance.
In benchmarks it barely beat the GTX580 1.5GB and when I mean barely we are talking less then 10fps in many cases. That's pretty weak considering the 7970 has double the amount of VRAM on it's stock model. Then add in the fact that it's being priced at $50 for then the GTX580. So in the end you are paying $50 more for an increase of less then 10fps in many games. What you need in terms of hardware largely depends on your intended use. As in what resolution you are going to be playing at and what games you are going to play. If you are going to be playing games that actually use SLI correctly a x2 580 set up may be the way to go as their power can often exceed the requirements of what you need based on your resolution. Also keep in mind that the new Nvidia cards, which are still a couple months away, should soundly beat the 7970 and you will likely see a price drop on things like the 580. To add to what jm299 said, the only reason to get 7970 IMHO would be because it cost the same as a 570, otherwise dual sli 570 2.5GB is about 3 to 6 fps different then sli 580 where it counts, and most times with sli 570 you are getting more then you need at 1900 x 1200 res so sli 580 will exceed where you are already exceeding what you need.
Post your build and res and let us help you

Cost the same as the 570??? The 7970 is being priced more then the 570 and the 580 (for the stock model). The listings I'm seeing for the 7970 show $550 for the base model and $600 for the special edition models. The 570 costs $350 for the 1.2GB and $400 for the 2.5GB and the 580 costs $500 for 1.5GB and the 3GB version is around $575. Edited by jmaster299 - 10 Jan 2012 at 4:12am |

Exactly, since they don't cost the same there is no reason to get a 7970, cause 570 sli will give you more then you need to begin with, there is no point in spending more money for power you will never ever notice.
We are both saying the same thing |
