I've been searching for a new laptop to use as an alternative to my desktop. After reading various reviews here and on the web I feel confident that DS will be my next laptop purchase. I'm not a gamer but would like the option of running both an SSD and HDD in the laptop. My main use will be in our business of developing instructor lead training, web and computer based training. It will need to run Office Pro 2010 full out, as well as Adobe Captivate, and Oracle's User Productivity Kit. I will have numerous programs running at the same time as well surfing the web, and streaming Netflx and other movies and/or sprting events. While Battery life is not crucial, I would like to be able to watch a movie or listen to music if traveling.
I would like to stay in the range of $2000.00 give or take. Below is the X17 build that I feel would meet my needs. Chassis Model: Digital Storm x17 Laptop (Model: 8170) The above system prices out at $2039. How much battery life are other owners of X17's getting? Is it possible to enable NVIDIA Optimus with this GPU to get better battery life? Have any current X17 owners had any major issues or problems with? How do you feel the above system handle my business needs. Thanks for any and all input. Al |

Thank you for picking Digital Storm!
You will see about 1.5 hours of battery life on such a system. If you want good battery life, and you're not gaming, which I see based on your response, you should consider our xm17 which features NVIDIA's Optimus technology. You should be able to get 2 hours of battery life with the xm17. Overall, I feel the xm17 is a better fit for you, with the saved cash, you could upgrade the CPU or the space on the SSD since they only have one hard drive bay. Or, if you do have some extra room for upgrades, the GTX 580M does have NVIDIA's Optimus Technology. |

Thanks for your prompt response Alex.
I have been going back and forth between the xm17 and x 17 and debating with myself the pros and cons of each build. I like the fact that the x17 has better speakers and a second drive bay while the xm17 has Optimus and could give better battery time if and when I need it. But, based on your estimates of 1.5 hours for the x17 and 2 hours for the xm17, that is not as much of a difference in battery time as i thought it might be between the 2 builds. While I don't travel that often, it seems I would need a second battery to bring if I was. What is the cost of a second battery for each model. Thanks again Al |
