Newbie here interested in one of the Holiday Specials for myself and son's for Christmas. Not hardcore gamers but enjoy cutting edge FPS (Crysis, etc) and WoW , etc. Will probably be using a 22" monitor at 1680 x 1050 I guess. The $1799.00 system is a nice rig but not sure how far it will cary me into the future, i.e. processor, graphics card. Also low noise and heat very important and not sure about that. The $2599.00 rig rocks but wondering if the 6 GB ram and the 1 TB harddrive are a little overkill, money that could better be applied else where? Also not familiar with liquid cooling systems ... how dependable they are and how much maintenance on them. Does this rig with the i7 processor and single GTX280 card really need it?? Don't really want to wait to build a system due to Christmas if one of these will do.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Oh man, you came to the right place for help *hug*. Firstable the 1799.00 system is just AMZING and since it has a very nice mobo and the i7 processors are high-end you should be good to go for future upgrades. Same goes for the GTX260, imho its the best card for the price from Nvidia right now. On the other hand liquid cooling systems can be an ass sometimes. One of our fellow forum member got his DS rig with a unseathed hose and....well...yeah..you guessed. But he got it all worked out!!! I would go for a AIR cooling solution as for now and upgrade to liquid later on if needed!! Happy Christmas to you and youre family...

do not get liquid cooling. you will not need it. agreed with acs; 260 is best as a GPU. the 1TB hard drive and the 6GB RAM are not overkill in my opinion.
edit: oh and by the way, i would recommend the HAF case, as it comes with air cooling already in it. not sure if your consideration already has it, but just to mention that. Edited by yungerkid - 15 Dec 2008 at 7:14pm |

thanks youngerkid. but I am assuming these Holiday Specials are not modifiable so you get what you get.. so it's one or the other.
Thanks again.

The holiday deal for $2599.00 is a very popular choice. It comes with enough horse power for the future. It has a strong upgrade foundation which is using Intel's new socket for the i7 processors.
Not only that, it has a GTX 280 which is a very powerful gaming card.
To shed some light on liquid cooling, it's very rare to have a leak with our units, and even if it does happen, the fluid is non-conductive and we are here to take care of you as a valued customer.
The liquid cooling system used on the $2599.00 deal is actually a very simple liquid cooling kit. It's very easy to change or remove and it has zero maintenance for years.
Warm Regards,
Alex

Alex,
Thanks for the reply. Couple of questions. Are these Holiday Specials modifiable at all? also I had read on another post that overclocking the processor decreases like span. If so.. how much as this deal has an overclocked processor.
Thanks!
Mike

Sorry but they are already built and tested. We cannot allow changes to them. Liquid cooling a processor does not affect its lifespan if it is not aggressively overclocked. None of our systems that we ship are.
Warm Regards,
Alex

When done right, like DS does, the difference is so little, that you would never notice the difference in life span of cpu, lets just say you would get rid of your system way beofore the cpu would die
