So I don't know very much about computers, but I am thinking of getting a new laptop through DS.  primarily for gaming.

As far as i can tell, with the 18 and 17D core components maxed out; 17D is the way to go:

17D                                    vs.    18
i7 980X 3.33GHz                  vs.    i7 920XM 2.0GHz (8MB Cache)
12 GB DDR3 at 1333MHz     vs.    8GB DDR3 at 1333MHz

But when it comes to graphics, 18 has 2x Dual SLI GTX 285M with 17D only having just one.

So, i guess my question is what is better for gaming, a higher processor and system memory or dual video cards. Advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

The dual video cards will be a better option for gaming. Especially since these laptops have high resolutions.

Thanks!

I think I'll go with the dual card option then. But one more question, what is the benefit of having a higher processor and system memory?

(totally want to make an informed decision) :)

Well a faster CPU and more memory means an overall quicker laptop. However, all of the laptops we offer are very fast. Computers have come to the point where you can't really tell the difference in real usage unless you sit down and run benchmarks. But, hey, you didn't buy a computer to run benchmarks all day right?

The dual video card laptop is still very powerful. It's a great choice.
