    Posted: 07 Jun 2012 at 6:18pm
I was looking for a monitor recommendation. I have dual 680 cards and was considering a Dell Ultrashap U2711 or U3011. Can those cards handle max settings (2560x1600) on those monitors? Or Shold I just get the Dell U24 and run at 1900.

Thanks

They should be perfectly fine on any single monitor, and they should be good for most games, even with dual monitors at that resolution.

Hi capmeo23,

Here is a reveiw of the GTX 690 but they also show results of the GTX 680 in SLI. http://www.anandtech.com/show/5805/nvidia-geforce-gtx-690-review-ultra-expensive-ultra-rare-ultra-fast
The U3011 has a resolution of 2560 x 1600(16:10 aspect ratio) which they show in the review.  The U2711 has a resolution of 2560 x 1440(16:9 aspect ratio) which is not shown in the review.  You would get better performance at the 2560 x 1440 resolution than what is shown for the 2560 x 1600.

I hope this helps you

Great - Very helpful. Will review.

I am trying to decide if the cost of the monitor justifies the increase in graphics performance.

Hi capmeo23,

The 30" Dell is a monster and a great screen for gaming. It is Hugh though and the 27" may be a good compromise. The 27" will definitely save you some money. It runs 2560 x 1440 and your two 680s will be fine with most games out today. There are one or two games that you might have to turn down the AA settings just a bit. Crysis Warhead is one game that you might have to reduce AA if you want to stay close to 60 FPS. But even with 4X AA Crysis would run around 45 FPS.

If you drop back to the 2412 you will have ridiculous performance. SLI 680 would be more than you need. My choice would be the 2711 with SLI 680.

Thanks FrankW - I was wondering if a 30" monitor might be too big for gaming. Anyone have experience with this monitor?

capmeo23, we do have several members who play on the Dell 30". I have never seen anyone complain about having too much real estate.

I think it comes down to your budget and if you have space for it on your desk. You will have to move it back a bit from you. Gee, picking a 27" or 30" IPS monitor, I wish I had those kinds of troubles.
