I am curious. What would be the advantage of two 8800 GTs in SLI over one 8800 Ultra 786? Obviously, the upgrade economics are easy to think of. But what about performance in gaming?

Ultra.
It has higher clocks, more ram, higher bandwidth, everything is just better =x And it's guaranteed to give performance. Easier to find, uses less power, won't be problems with overheating... |

Good point, but with SLI you have two 8800 gpus. Can a single ultra, with a slightly higher clock rate really beat out two 8800 gts? If possible I would like to see benchmarks.

After giving it some thought, I would go with a single ultra. If you want sli, you could always add another ultra later. SkyR is right, having only one 8800 card would cut down on heat big time, and space...

ULTRA. Not a big fan of SLI, the performance gains in most cases suffer a lot from diminishing returns. I tend to see both SLI and Crossfire as a clever way to just move more product. I would always go with a single better card over SLI, unless you already have one card and are looking for a cheap upgrade.

What gives off more heat one Ultra or two GT's?
Is it more economical to buy two GT's or one Ultra, without taking future SLIing the Ultra into account? Are two GTs faster than one Ultra? |

Depending on your brand loyalty, you can get SLI GT for as low as $450 and an Ultra is like $600.
The GT gets really really hot (up to 120c on load)... so I STRONGLY recommend you get aftermarket coolers if you are going to SLI them. Performance is really a mix bag =x With SLI, you could see a 0% performance increase in one game and a 50% increase in another... But generally... unless you are playing on 2560x1600, SLI GT will perform better than a single Ultra.. But I still stick by the Ultra if money isn't your problem... |

That's right, you should get an Ultra better than 2x8800GT.
If you are worry about the heat problem, you may go with Liquid Cooling for your Video Card(s). Edited by Kenny - 02 Dec 2007 at 1:42pm |
