I will be getting my dual boot machine shortly (XP and Vista 64 bit) and was planning on backing up my important files on an external HD. My question is this: Will I have a problem storing files from two different OS on the same external HD? Would it be better that I have 2?
I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question, but I really have no idea what to expect with having two operating systems on the same rig.
Any sage advice would be welcome.

Backup files are just data as far as your OSs are concerned. You may have to be a little more organized to keep track of what's going on, but I think that's about it. You could, in fact, back up both/either of the installations using a backup progam installed on just one of the OSs.
Just make sure the external drive is big enough.
