Do you have a link to what you are referring to?
hot swap generally means removing your HDD while the PC is on, but your mobo needs to support that, its a feature of mainly servers and some workstations. in a case of my PC for example tho, it would allow me to remove/exchange my HDDs easily when the PC is off. for example in this case you see the HDD coming out the HDD bay, and the HDD bay would site in one of your DVD/CD bays so its right in the front of the PC, the one in this picture is tray-less, normally the HDD comes out in a tray and then you just remove HDD from the tray.:
click image to enlarge so a solid state hard drive hot swap bay, would refer to a bay like above thats for SSDs. for the hailstorm case they are coming out with, it has 4 hot swap bays that fit both 3.5" (regular hdd) and 2.5" (ssds).

hey dst, any idea if the hotswap bay comes standard with the hailstorm? that doesn't seem like something everyone would need, be a shame if the case cost more money for something most people won't need

It comes standard, and if you ask me, everybody needs it.
every should clone their HDD in case of a disaster, and when you clone your HDD you always should check the clone and make sure it works right, so right there IMHO you need it. second it makes swapping your HDDS real easy, for those that need to swap their HDD2/3/4 with other HDDS. but I doubt that feature is making the case cost go any higher. its more for the enthusiasts anyways, cause it has very low airflow, IMHO its for systems with LC all around. |

if you back your OS HDD like you should then it will come in handy since after the cloning of the OS HDD, you need to test a clone, and it would be very simple if you just could swap it real quick with a hot swap bay, vs opening the side panel, unplugging the data/power wires, then removing the HDD and putting in the clone, connect everything, test and see if the clone works right and then repeat process to put back the original HDD.

well one of these times you gonna have some important stuff that you will lose and then you will start cloning like the rest of us, till then you won't see the use for it.

Cloning is much safer IMO, I clone to an external that is never on unless I'm going to clone, this say I'm not worried about the clone dieing.
I remember the first time I lost my data cause the HDD that was only 3month old decided to die. luckily I had an image back up, unfortunately the image backup did not work so I got screwed. since then I have been doing clone instead and never had one problem, I have had HDDs go down on me but I have not lost data yet, I just restore from my clone and pick up where I left off ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 21 Aug 2009 at 3:43am |

cloning you are copying the drive to another drive that operates separately from the original drive, no matter what happens to the system or any HDD in the system you clone is fine. There is no worry of HDD dieing, raid failing or etc.

no not at all, you need Acronis true image to do it, but you don't image it, you choose the clone feature and clone the drive.
with cloning you are duplicating the drive, the OS/apps and all, in other words you can take out the original drive and put in the clone and just use the clone as your new OS drive, but we use it for back, so something happens to my OS drive right now, I will just copy my clone back to a new HDD that works, and I will pick up from the time I did the cloning, in this case it was 2 days ago, I used to clone once a night (takes 15 minutes at the most for me) but then I saw no reason for it, so now I back up once a week or just twice a week, if I adds some important changes to any of my software/OS, I clone the drive then just to be safe. this way I don't have to reinstall OS/apps/other things, then go back and do all the settings for OS/apps and such, instead it takes me 15 to pick back up with everything as they were. click "CLone Guide" in my sig it takes to you to my walk thru, its very simple, dont let it fool you. ![]() ![]()
