Purchased my Digital Storm system about two months ago with just the DVD / CD Reader. Since then I installed an LG DVD/CD reader/writer. I just purchased Age of Conan through an online store and when I received it I noticed that Game Disk 1 had come lose in the case and had been ever so lightly scratched. When I tried to install Age of Conan, it got about 3/4 of the way through the install and then had difficulty reading the disk and would not continue. I tried gently cleaning the disk and then installing again and the same problem occurred. This was all done with the DVD/CD reader drive that I purchased with the system. Finally, I put the disk in the DVD/CD reader writer LG scribe drive I purchased at Best Buy and it installed without a problem.
Does my Digital Storm DVD/CD drive need replacement? Someone at work told me that some drive brands are better than others at reading from scratched disks. Is this the case or is my first drive going out? This is the first problem I have encountered with the drive. It has been installing and reading from DVDs and CD without a hitch till now. Anyone with insight into the problem? |

I don't think anything is wrong with your first drive. The LG one, more than likely has higher quality components. I do believe that some drive brands are better than others, actually I know.
Try this out if you feel like it. I have. Burn a CD and scratch it up intentionally a fair amount (simulated wear/tear). Now try to play that CD in a few different vehicles. My Chevy Cobalt refuses to read scratched CDs, Those same CDs play okay (occasional jumps/skips/static) in my older brothers Mitsubishi Eclipse, then they play flawlessly in my dads Cadillac Escalade. Now I know you are not exactly using your computer as a giant CD player but it is the same concept when it comes to reading any kind of CD/DVD whether it is music, a movie or a game.
