First off ,thanks for all the help about upgrading my 8800GTX to a newer card. I have the nForce 680i sli compatable motherboard. The forum said I could not upgrade because the board supports PCI 1.0 and all the new cards need a motherboard with pci 2.0. My Quake 4 recently started freezing up on
would not unfreeze. I had no response from the keyboard so I had to do a hard shut down. I have a 750 watt power supply and 4GB of Dominator 1066 memory.
The QX 6700 cpu has an air cooling system. Can you tell me what you think? Are there any cards out there that support PCI 1.00 that are better than the 8800 GTX? I can buy the 8800 Ultra GTX. Your wealth of knowledge is much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Drumbanger

As far as I know, all of the NVIDIA 200 series card do work on the 680i mobo. I'm using a GTS 250 with mine. I assume that the higher numbered cards also work, In fact, I'm pretty sure they do, and I think that unless you upgrade to one of the top of the line cards that you won't see any real world performance hit due to PCIe 1.1. Even though PCIe 2 is like twice as fast as PCIe 1, that doesn't seem to be an issue with 260 and 275 class cards.
The GTS 250 would be a very slight upgrade from your 8800 GTX. The 260 somewhat more so.

You could use a 280 GTX. Your system may not be able to use it to its maximum potential, but the difference will be negligible. I'd give it a try, there are some pretty good deals on 280GTX or even a 275GTX, which would be very similar. |

you won't use the cards full potential, but if you gonna try it then do so with the GTX 275.

Dear DS.
I'm going to purchase the 275 on your advice. I've never installed a high end video card before. Do you have to totally uninstall the 8800 GTX software and then install the 275 software?
Thanks so much for the help,

Dear Drumbanger:
Before you purchase the 275 check the 275 power requirements and connection and size and make sure it fits in your case, you have enough power for it and the correct power connections. the 275 needs 550w and 2 x 6 pin connectors, if I'm not mistaken it might be an inch or so longer then the 8800 also. I always completely remove the old video driver and have Windows reboot using its stock video driver before trying to install a different board specific driver. Once upon a time this was mandatory. Now a days, I'm not sure. Considering how touchy video drivers can be, it certainly doesn't hurt to take the extra step.
DST4ME, I'm confused about this video card power business. The spec for the GTX 275 says, "Minimum of a 550 Watt power supply". I'm assuming that's for the total system, including the 130W or so that the CPU uses, another 40 - 50 watts for the disk drive, plus a bunch more for all the hot little beggers on the motherboard, correct? The GPU can't suck that much power all by itself, can it? Even running at 70 degrees C, or whatever, the GPU isn't dissipating that much energy. Edited by Bill the Cat - 07 May 2009 at 9:33pm |

Dear DST4ME,
I have the Cooler Master 830. Where would the two connectors be to hook up the card?
Thanks for your time,

thats total wattage they would like your PSU to be, but the card itself will pull a good 350w to 400w under full 3d load. in dual sli they can pull around 600w.
this is why you can run 2 x 295 or 3 x 285 or 3 x 275 with a 1000w PSU |

Dear Harleyman,
All my temps look good. 69 to 70 degrees under load. I upgraded my memory last year to the 1066 dominator ,4 gbs. My resolution is 1600x1050. What else am I looking at?
Thanks so much,

I'm running Blizzard Extreme Silent Arctic Cooling Heat-sink and Fan. Stage 2 cooling.I use the Evga 1.4 for info. My temps start out at around 56 and then go to about 69 in intense game play. These have always been my temps.
Thanks for taking the time,

Dear Harleyman,
When I'm playing quake 4 the game freezes in the same place. I ran core temp and the temps for the four cores are 39-40-41-43. Why does The evga 1.4 say the temperatures are so high?
Thanks so much,

try playing at a lower resolution, if it does not freeze at a lower resolution then you just need another 8800
70 is not hot at all, above 85c is hot, my cards run around 80c 24/7 with no problems. one person's temps don't' decide what is hot or not, we have a limit for that set by the manufacturer already, and 70c is no where near that limit. |

My pleasure.
HM is right tho, if you are experiencing freezing then that is not a sign that your card is bad, it can be drivers or software conflict, I didn't catch that at first. also try one older and one newer drivers for your 8800 and see if that takes care of the freezing |
