Topic: Easy to install air cooler Velox 5600x Dark Hero Posted: 05 Oct 2021 at 5:11pm |

I purchased earlier this year a Velox with a AMD 5600x cpu, Rog crosshair VIII dark hero, 32 gig ram, Nvidia 3060 TI, and stock air cooler.
I wanted to avoid liquid cooling. The problem is that some games like Paradox Stellaris cause the fan to speed up and be very load while at the same time the game seems to slow/pause. The noise bothers me but the slow/pause while the fan ramps annoys me. Happens multiple times during late game. I had tried a custom fan curve 43 35% 70 45% 85 100% but I stopped using it with the bios update 3801 came out as it seemed better. However, the issue is still happening so I am thinking a better air cooler. So my question is what is a easy to install air cpu cooler for my board and memory and case? I have not installed one for over 10 years and I want something easy to install that will fit. Price up to $150 or so. Thank you. Edited by 17blue17 - 05 Oct 2021 at 5:12pm |

I made the same decision recently.
Similar... I hadn't done it since the days of retention mounts being standard. Ha! Anyway... With their reputation, I decided to go with Noctua -- which I indeed hadn't used before. My NH-U9S review OCPD was probably the root cause of mentioning the mounting trouble. I put extra time into very carefully spreading the paste and the fact I needed to shift the cooler even the slightest after contact to have the screws line up was depressing. It didn't affect the rating. If you go with Noctua, I think the NH-U12S would do well. The NH-D15S could run even quieter. However, I'm not sure it would fit, namely height. I assume so, but cannot guarantee. I am unable to find the CPU cooler height clearance for the Velox X. Edited by MrCheetah - 05 Oct 2021 at 11:14pm |

The Noctuas are very large, make sure the RAM sticks are low enough. The Velox is a large enough case for one. I'd recommend you also check an AIO. They are almost as trouble free as an air cooler and easier to install. Good luck.

Thank you for the replies.
I have heard about the ram stick issue but I don't know enough to measure. I don't want to try to install and find out there is a problem. I also don't want to crack the board or have to pull the whole board to install a cooler. Both of which is why I was hoping someone with the same setup could recommend something. Does it make sense that when the fan speeds up the game would pause/temp freeze? This only happens with the one game and I think a lot of math is going on with fleets attacking each other but still why a slow down due to fans speeding up? |

I recently ordered a Velox, and asked Digital Storm to install a Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler. They were concerned that it wouldn't have enough clearance for my G.Skill TridentZ memory modules. So, we changed it to the NH-D15S. That version has cooling that is almost as good, but it provides more clearance for RAM and PCIe cards.
I've been using the Velox with the NH-D15S for about 2 months now. That cooler is amazing! I've never seen my CPU temperature go above 65C, and that's with my case fans running at a low speed of only 800 RPMs. I've been playing Deliver Us the Moon, Star Wars Squadrons, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The CPU temps have been great with those games. By the way, if you decide to try the NH-D15S, consider getting the chromax black version. I think it looks much better. https://noctua.at/en/nh-d15s-chromax-black |

Thank you! Interesting when I asked several months ago Digital Storm refused to install after market coolers. I appreciate the information.

I ordered mine in early July. Maybe they changed their policy on after market coolers at some point.
Also, I'm a local customer, so the computer didn't need to be shipped. I wonder if that factored into their decision. I'm sure there is a greater chance of problems when shipping a computer with a ginormous air cooler.

Ok I appreciate all the feedback. I have ordered a NH-D15S chromax black and Noctua cleaning wipes.
I have also watched a few videos. It appears I do not have to pull the board to install. I saw one review claiming the brackets will not work with a dark hero and other saying it worked fine. Never can trust reviews any more so I appreciate the feed back here. Thanks again. |

Well Update
I carefully watched videos and then started the operation. 1) the wraith cooler that came with the 5600x is not like the videos. 2) the cpu came out with the wraith and then when I tried to separate the two the cpu fell in the case and bent a whole line of pins - REST IN PEACE 5600X. You lived almost 4 months. 3) before I realized the bent pins I tried to install the Noctua NH-D15S. It is a pain in the @!$%%$## in trying to line up the 2 screws to attach to the bracket. Every time I had to lift up a little the cpu came out again. Maybe if I had removed the whole board??? Why do the cpu slide out so easy??? I now have a new 5950x coming from Amazon and I have sent a email request to the local computer repair store to see if they will install for me. Hopefully they know what they are doing...... Atleast it was a 5600x that died and not a 5950x. Life goes on........ and it gave me an excuse to upgrade to the 5950x. Its strange as I am currently using my 10 year old digital storm and other than slower boot and slower backups there is not that much difference for the games I play compared to the 5600x Edited by 17blue17 - 10 Oct 2021 at 9:25pm |

Ugggh. I'm sure that must have been super frustrating, and some expletives where probably flying out of your mouth. I hate it when I'm trying to upgrade something, and I end up breaking an important part.
Well, I think you have a good plan. Take it to a local computer repair shop, and let them deal with it. I bet they'll do a good job. Regarding your CPU performance, I wouldn't worry about it too much. The games that you're playing are probably GPU bound rather than CPU bound, and that's why you're not seeing much difference. That's typical for a lot of games. Down the road you'll probably see more of a difference. Best of luck. Let us know how it goes. |

I don't know if it'll make you feel better. That has happened to most of us at one point.
Interesting... As I mentioned earlier, I thought it was mostly my pickiness. Because, I lined it up perfectly the first time. However, that was a practice run without thermal paste. After spreading the paste, the cooler did require a half-dozen or so shifts to line up both screws. Edited by MrCheetah - 10 Oct 2021 at 11:05pm |

I watched that same video 5 times before I did the operation. Like I said the wraith cooler with the 5600x had no latch or clips. It had 4 spring loaded screws. I loosened the screws and the springs pop it up with the cpu attached. Boom Instant.
I then tried to slide the cpu off and it fell into the case. Good news is that the local repair store said they will do the work. The bad news is that they have not done that particular heat sink. When you installed did you have to remove the entire board first in order to see to line things up? Edited by 17blue17 - 11 Oct 2021 at 1:21pm |

Yeah. The latch-type mechanism is old school now. That was the last type of cooler I worked with before the Noctua swap. So, this latest cooler install was a somewhat new experience for me as well.
I just rewatched the video and... Yeah... He does forget to mention another key/helpful action. It isn't obvious, but he's (no doubt) applying a little pressure while undoing the first latch to prevent the cooler from popping up. Additionally, thermal paste can create a good suction, even after twisting the cooler. With the four screw square layout, it's best to perform a few rotations on each screw in diagonal fashion (e.g., top-left then bottom-right then top-right then bottom-left and repeat).
Fortunately, no -- was a tight fit though. I did lay the PC down for the entire process. I also had a folded, thin towel underneath to hold the underside mounting bracket in place (i.e., tight enough to the back of the motherboard) while fastening the front brackets. To attach the cooler to the bracket, I needed to shift and twist the tower a little before either of the two screws would catch. Edited by MrCheetah - 11 Oct 2021 at 4:07pm |

Thank you for telling me it can be done without removing the board. I am still going to offer that option to the tech guy. I suspect it would be much easier to line up if you could see more but I don't remember how much of a pain it is to remove a board.
For the back plate the one end stayed but the other end dropped and I could not get to the back of the board. The solution: I put in one temp screw without the spacer or bracket in one of the dropped end holes and used the screw as a handle to lift the back plate then held it up while I did the other one on that side correctly then removed the temp screw and did the last one correctly with spacer and bracket. I think there could be a much better mounting system then trying to line up the two screws without being able to see. Edited by 17blue17 - 14 Oct 2021 at 6:24pm |

It certainly wasn't fun and required far more time than expected -- between 1 and 1.5 hours total (disconnect setup, prep, swap coolers, reconnect setup)

Computer tech came to my home today and installed the new 5950x cpu and the NH-D15S in about 20 minutes..... wanted to charge me $59 I said no. How about $100 instead? In my small town a lot of times vendors do not call people back so I am appreciative for such great work.
I can now eat and sleep again Been depressed for days after wrecking the 5600x. |

Incredible thread!
It was really an interesting read, it had stuff happen like always happens to me then suddenly everything worked out in the end. Took a few dollars but you appreciated it beyond the simple dollars and show your gratitude that showed real respect for the Tech! |

Well there was also $769 for the new cpu and more for the paste and the paste remover ...... and then first boot with the tech it did nothing for a while with a blank screen....... and we looked at each other and waited... and then the screen said new cpu ..... and my heart started beating again..... The 5600x may have a small chance at a new life as the tech wanted it bent pins and all so maybe a few prayers for that poor 5600x.... Edited by 17blue17 - 15 Oct 2021 at 1:06pm |
