I have a Vanquish 5 purchased in 2016 (have config ID if needed). My son wants to upgrade the cpu from i5 to i7 for better performance in the newer games. I'm guessing this will require a new motherboard. I've built my own computer before, but I'm not really proficient at it. Would it be easier to upgrade the graphics card, and/or the RAM, or is there a recommend solution that you can provide?
Setup Vanquish 5 i5 6600k 3.5 ghz ASUS/GIGABYTE INTEL Z170 CHIPSET 16GB DDR4 2666Mhz GeForce GTX 1070 8GB |

If you’re looking at the i7-6700k for its faster clock and hyper threading, then I don’t believe you need a new motherboard. It will be faster, but not for all games, just cpu intense ones. It is a decent upgrade, not sure it’s worth the money.
Upgrading the video card depends what games you play and the monitor resolution. If you play on a 1080p then the 1070 should be fine. 1440p might be worth a gtx 1080. Ram is fine. |

Agree with bprat22 on all counts. The GTX 1070 is THE card for best performance at 1080p res. RAM is more than enough, and The CPU should not be holding you back.
If you're at 1440p, the 1080 will be all you need, and the difference will be very noticeable. Edited by Cretae - 01 Dec 2018 at 3:19am |

thx for the info. in researching chips, besides thread and pci lanes, is there much of a difference between the i5 9600k (9th gen), and the i7 8700k (8th gen)? the i5 is almost $100 cheaper, but seems to be a comparable chip.

Strictly for gaming, only about a 5-6% difference. You lose the extra threads with the 9600K, but games don't use them. You rarely if ever get beyond the first two cores, and threads don't come into it.
If you're looking to save big on a CPU/MOBO combo, look into the 2600x Ryzen and a motherboard of your choice for it. You'll get all those threads back and still be within about 15% performance of a GTX 8700K. Save a ton of money. |
