The number one online auction site EBay, agreed to buy the internet communication company Skype to create "an unparalleled e-commerce and communications engine". E-Bay will pay $2.6 billion, half in cash and half in stocks. If certain targets are met, EBay is willing to pay another $1.5 billion in the next three years, raising the deal to over $4 billion.

EBay’s chief executive Meg Whitman explained the purpose of the deal. "By combining the two leading e-commerce franchises, EBay and PayPal, with the leader in Internet voice communications, we will create an extraordinarily powerful environment for business on the net."

Skype’s chief executive Niklas Zennstrom, said the deal will make easier the way people are communicating using the Internet. Zennstrom will be joining E-Bay’s senior management team.
