I had a recent scare
I loaded up Audcity, a sound management piece of software. When I set my "recording sound" device and then went about my business I later notice a echo in all my normal playbacks. At first I didn't realize the cause of the echo, only had I had clicked something If I shut the realtek device off, everything sounded normal again but then my audcity would find and recording device for recording. Then I turn it back on, and audicity recognized it but then the echo in the sound coming from the speakers again. For a while I played around until I fought what was causing the echo. Which was I had to turn off the recording device as as part of the "current speaker" sound sources.

You makes changes which appear OK when you click them, holding to find out you have a problem. Lucky for me it was all around the same time
