Got a question about mobos. I've seen some for the i7 procs that say they are P55 boards, and some that are X58 boards. What is the difference, and which is better?

Yes there is both an i7 for the X58 chipset and the P55 chipset. The X58 i7 is Socket LGA 1366, while the P55 i7 is Socket LGA 1156.
The difference, X58 is target towards enthusiasts and servers, while the P55 is target to the mainstream audience. Generally if you are only going to have one video card in your system P55 is the way to go due to only having native support for one 16x PCI-E slot, with 2 cards it is split into 8x/8x. With 2-3 video cards you should be looking at the X58 platform. |

the x58 with socket 1366 can be upgraded to the next round of cpus (6 core).
the p55 socket 1156 can't be upgraded and will be dead after this cpu. Edited by DST4ME - 05 Oct 2009 at 1:40am |

Thanks for the info, guys. For the rig I am planning, I am only going to have one video card initially, but would definitely like to be able to add one later if I felt the need, so looks like X58 is the way to go.

I like the x58 purely due to the option of being able to upgrade the cpu.

Yeah, that's an excellent reason to go that route. Thanks again for all the help.
