1) What is your opinion of the quality of the tech support offered by ESET Smart Security?

2) Do you have to pay for tech support via telephone or is it free?

Not really the answer you were looking for, but I'm more impressed by the fact that I have never had to contact them.

Never had to contact them. Its one of the best IMO if not the best.

once your purchase a license then I think tech support is free but you should not even need it.

I contacted them & they informed  me that tech support is definitely free.
Of course, the best thing is never having a reason to contact tech support in the first place.

Also interesting to note:  Consumer Reports has recently published a review of computer security software & ESET Smart Security was their highest rated one.

I'm definitely going to download the 30-day trial and see how it works.  Thanks again.

People that I know that have tried McAfee recently say that it has a noticeable impact on performance.

Is it really "pointless" meaning it doesn't protect at all and just bogs things down?  Or is it that it just isn't good relative to a program like eset.  I get Mcafee for free so for me to switch it would mean that Mcafee just doesn't protect worth a darn.  i think a lot of other have this situation.

I can believe that eset is way better but it's hard for me to beleive that mcafee won't catch and get rid of most viruses.

As I read it most reviews agree that Mcafee isn't all that however this is mostly do to poor tech support and the heavy footprint.  They seem to agree that mcafee does stop viruses.

Also, I don't use file sharing or go to suspect websites so i'n not sure someone like me would need something like eset over mcafee.  do you guys agree?

Above link compares a bunch of anti-virus programs.  Interesting.

Mcafee had some false alarms but wasn't terrible.  It does seem rather heavy in comparison to the others though.  I wonder if i use windows firewall and shut down Mcafee's wall and some other stuff will it make the footprint noticably lighter?

yes it does catch viruses, but it will bug down your system, startup and other things, even if you stopped its firewall, its av has around 8 processes I think, its just not worth it.

you think you are getting it for free but you are not, you pay a price in form of performance and headaches.

you don't need to go any questionable sites, or do filesharing to catch a virus, you just need to use the net in some way, be it surfing, be it email.

From the people I know the a/v portion is good but resource intensive so you will likely have some trade off for the "free" cost.

You can always try it, see how it goes and then remove and replace it.

I truthfully haven't noticed a slowing of performance.  But I may just do that at some point to see if their is any difference.  Just too lazy right now.

Good luck and hopefully you won't notice any performance issues.

I believe you.  I just haven't noticed it.  I really just wondered if it was that bad that I should pay for another service over getting it for free.

I hadn't seen this post till now.  I will look into eset and research this some more.

Is norton antivirus (just the Internet Security version) OK?  I can use that for free as well.

I currently use Norton Internet Security 2010.  It is very good on performance and they've made a lot of good changes over the past two years.  It is so much better than 3-5 years ago when it bloated up.

Sweet!  Thats one positive vote for norton.  I know internet security is very important an I'm willing to pay $ if mine is that bad but if i can do free that is so much better, lol.

anyone else have norton internet security and like it?  or have opinions?  DST4ME?

so you see for yourself now right?

I have never been a norton fan, they were just like mcafee, huge foot print, in 2009 something happened and they put out a lighter app and a better app, seems to be ok, but for me it will take more then a few years, for all I know next year they could be back to what they were doing before, I have no reason to leave eset either to be honest, its a great app and very fast and light, I don't have a bad thing to say about it, and they have been great for years, so they have great track record.

I downloaded norten internet security 2010 as I had a free use.  I like it.  After this runs out I'll check out eset for sure, thanks all.
