Hey,
Just wondering if you guys could recommend some essential software for a new computer. Just some basic stuff, or anything else you think is essential. (MS Office, Anti-Virus, Burning Software, etc.) I'm trying to figure out what kind of programs I want to get (hopefully that can be downloaded for free) when my new computer arrives next week. Thanks!

you got the basics covered, everything else really depends on what you use the computer for.

CCleaner, for cleaning temps files, editing startup apps, installing and uninstalling apps.
CPU-z for cpu info GPUz for gpu info MSI Afterburner, for setting gpu fan profile and ocing gpus. ESET Smart Security, it has a 30 day full free trial, try it first then buy a license after 30 days I love it and highly recommend it. (anti virus and firewall) Malwarebytes for anti spyware, the free version does not offer realtime protection, but if you know what you are doing, you don't need the realtime protection. HWMonitor to monitor temps for many parts of pc. Edited by DST4ME - 17 Sep 2011 at 3:01pm |

buncha sites say bitdefender is best for anti-virus, i installed it about a month ago and i've never had a problem, other than you have to turn on "game mode" before you play a game, it was only 30$ for a year which is cheap comparatively< ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332/netdefender/hui/ndhui.js?0&0&0">

bitdefender is not the best, if anything if you had it around march last year you would have hated them as one of their updates could have killed your os and make you lose all data.
eset I have been using for over 6 years (before it was just nod32) and I have never had any problems from them. Edited by DST4ME - 17 Sep 2011 at 9:18pm |

you have to find out which plugin it is and disable it. I forget which one it was. disable them one by one and see which one it is.

Out of curiosity is your BitDefender fully up to date? I don't use it, but I know that there were having an issue with the program injecting code as part of its anti-phishing toolbar a little bit ago. And the toolbar tends to not be disabled, even with it "appears" to be so.

Yeah I update it everyday, but the issue you're describing seems to make sense -___- sadly< ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332/netdefender/hui/ndhui.js?0&0&0">

Alright, I don't want to high-jack goldendarko's thread too badly, but there is something you can try to see whether it is related to BitDefender is to temporarily rename your Firefox executable.
This is the default (I think): C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe Try changing it to this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\flirefox.exe And then see if it still gives you problems after renaming the executable for Firefox. |

No problem, I'm not sure what the repercussions of renaming the executable are (if any), but in the meantime, you might send them a ticket about whats going on, to see if they have any more long-term advice. I'm fairly sure its a known issue, because I seem to recall hearing someone mentioning something like this elsewhere around early September.
Regardless, glad something worked in the meantime for you. Edited by Tidgxor - 18 Sep 2011 at 12:15am |

it has a 30 day free trial, so you can try it and see how you like it, after 30 days its subscription ends and you can't update it anymore.
