So I was checking the EVGA X58 Classified out, and the thought came to my head, why does a mobo need two Ethernet ports? Just curious because it doesn't make sense in my mind.

many reason, share network, connect to a separate network, double your bandwidth, etc, etc.

How do you use the two ethernet ports together to increase bandwidth?

you have to connect both and then create a bridge, etc etc.

I mean if its 2 separate lines you can bridge them, but if its just one line I don't see how it would help.

If it is anything like my 780i mobo, the driver lets you team the network ports to double your bandwidth.

It is handled completely inside the driver.

It is very cool in cases where you have switch limits, like most home networking switches are 100 megabit, well beyond even the fastest internet available for most home users, but if you run a home network like I do which is wired for desktops and wireless for laptops, your internal network limit of 100 megabit on a single switch port is pretty easy to hit, so on lan gaming parties with my friends, it is sweet, and also for file transfers, my PC which has all the large storage attached to it also has the widest pipe to my home network which means I can feed files to and from other computers on my home network to my firewire storage drives, while also downloading from the internet or playing a MMO or other internet game at the same time with little or no impact on my latency/FPS, which is cool.

I would recomend trying it if the things below are things you do alot:

  • Transfer large files between computers on a home lan that is wired
  • If you have computers accessing files on your DSO computer while you are playing network based games (MMO/Lan Party type stuff)
  • If you backup your other machines on your wired network to a firewire or USB2 drive on your DSO machine.

If your home network is not robust with many machines on it (Mine contains 7 full time computers and 3 wireless laptops) it may not be worthwhile to you. It is most helpfull in cases where your DSO computer is going to be operating as a file server for a good percentage of the time.

I store all my audio and movies on my DSO PC and stream them to my X-Box 360 from my DSO machine on demand. So I find the extra bandwidth is a requirement in my case.

Hope this helps, Dave Ouch
