I just replaced an 8800 GTS 320 with a GTS 250. The GTS 250 certainly isn't the greatest video card in the world, but for $120 or so, it is significantly faster than the old 880 GTS.

The new card idles at 34 degrees C. When I tried to play Crysis at 1280x1024 with all settings on HIGH, it ran for about two minutes while the GPU temp climbed to 65 degrees C. At that point the screen goes black, and you're done. During this sequence, the GPU fan speed does not change from it's original 35%.

If I use Precision to hand crank the fan up to 65 - 70%, the GPU temp stays in the mid 50 degree C range, and it hasn't crashed yet.

Should a video card like this "black out" at just 65 C? With the fan control in Precision set to AUTO, should this card be controlling it's own damn fan speed?

No, the 2xx series is rated at 105c. So there is something wrong I think.

Are you sure its the card? Wouldn't you start to get artifacts when a card is overheating?

most things only shut off a system at 80-90c

however i thnk your system settings might be automatically set to turn it off earlier than that, just ffor precaution

if you have nvidias nTune program it might be in there

Well, turns out that the GTS 250 was hosed. It started blacking out at lower and lower temperatures. Finally, it couldn't run Crysis for very long even with the fan at 100%. I returned it for another card, which is running Crysis in the low to mid 60 degree range, so far.

I still can't believe that this card doesn't control it's own fan speed. Do any of NVIDIA's more "modern cards control fan speed?

Uh, all of Nvidia's Cards do. Including the 250. You must have gotten a bad one.

In NYC it's getting awfully warm now and I'm seeing my computers temps going up a bunch. I just saw that my GPU went to 82C and my CPU went to 65C. For some reason my monitor started flickering when the GPU hit 82C. I have the GTX 260, maybe all the cards are like this.

My 200 series cards don't kick the fan up to they reach 80C.
Bill, too bad you didn't swing 30 more bones for a 260, a lot of performance gain for a small $$
Maybe step up program??

Justin,

It was kind of an impulse buy. I play games at such low resolutions that even the old 8800 GTS 320's performance in Crysis was acceptable (kinda...) At only 1280x1024 on a 21" CRT, the 250 is averaging 59 fps with everything on HIGH.

If I understand correctly, the 250 is a reskined 9800 GT+, and that's a (marginally) better card than the best of "old" 8800 series cards. So, that's a significant step for me. Still, your point is well taken.... Once I decided to pop for a new card, if I'd thought about it longer, my sights probably would have started to creep up.

Anywho, this is just a stop gap measure to get me to the Win 7 release, and I can start thinking about yet another DS machine.

Yea, I love the TJ9 even though it's gross overkill for system it contains. But of course, as I've said before, that's how I prefer my overkill. The TJ9's simple Stalinist era industrial design appeals to me. If you kick it accidently, it'll break your toe.

When the time comes, I'll probably ask DSO to build something from scratch. Maybe by the generation after next, it will be time to gut the TJ9 and fill it up again.

Hey Bill, have you ever dl'd EVGA Precision?  This program allows you to set your fan speed on you card.  I run mine at 100% and the card stays around 62c.  If I run it at on auto and no gaming, it stays around 71c.  I keep my AC on in the house at 76 degrees.

Hey Old Buddy,

I do use Precision, but apparently not very well. I'll claim that's because the program, like everything else EVGA makes, is so poorly documented these days, but I digress....

I have no idea what a safe crusing temp is for this GPU. The first (defective) card would crap out in the high 50s or very low 60s. I thought the automatic fan speed control didn't work because it never did anything. My current understanding is that the fan speed never changed because the progam didn't think the card had gotten hot enough, even though it was on the brink of crashing.

The replacement card runs Crysis in the mid 60s with the fan set to 70% or so. I haven't experimented with the new card in auto mode yet.

Am I being unreasonable here? Wouldn't you expect the manufacturer to tell customers what the max safe temp is? Intel certainly does for it's CPUs.

At 100% my fan's so loud, I have trouble hearing the gun fire. Seriously, it does intrude into the experience.

You know it's funny, my 8800GTX is not loud at all with it running at 100%.  However, my wife's 9800GT sounds like it's going to bust out of the case with it maxed at 100%.  It almost sounds like a little power drill.  I have to keep hers at 53% to be audibly tolerable.
