So there's a 3GB version of the 580 out now, and it looks like all that changed was the memory. I have heard that 590s sometimes have some issues especially in SLI, so would 2 of these cards be a more robust setup for now? Anyone know anything about these?

1.5 is fine right now. I haven't seen a game that will need more than that on any settings. If you're running in 1080p you won't even need more than one 580. Above the extra ram could be handy (possibly) and yes 2 also would be helpful (but not completely necessary)

I run x1200 resolution now, and if I go x1600 some day I know some games can reach the limits of 1.5GB cards now with ultra maxed settings. If you run 2 monitors the extra RAM could be helpful too, and I think that's what these cards are really for.  There's no way they would give any better performance normally though I think it's true.

If you aren't gaming in 1920x1080 you are missing out on a ton!

In addition to that getting a 580 would all be wasted if your gaming in x1200. Talking about that resolution performance doesn't matter. You could get a gtx 540 (if they even make it) and you would get over 100fps turning everything up as much as you want probably. Before spending all this money on a expensive gpu that will go old before u get to use it spend $150 on a 1080p monitor. But thats such a low resolution compared to what they have now the step up is like wow. i came from 720p on my laptop about 9 months ago and its amazing. Like games are so freaking clear! and deatailed. Even black ops with its decent graphics is so crisp and clean. But yea you don't need a single gtx 580 unless you are doing 1080p where in 1080p you could even get a 570... or a radeon 6950 2gb...

Wait, why would the 1920x1200 I'm running be less graphics intensive than 1920x1080? It's more pixels and a bigger picture? The 1080 screens are just 16:9 instead of 16:10?

wait a second? by x1200 and x1600 u meant above 1080p ok wow i thought u meant 1280x720 and stuff like that... wow disregard everything i said in the last post. The ram itself won't give more performance but as you said i guess there are some games that need more than 1.5gig so i guess you will be able to turn the settings up higher but other than that there would be no performance gain. so can youu start over? what question do you want answered?

Haha my bad. Ya, who even has monitors that small anymore? Now I have a 1920x1200, I may go with 2560x1600 one day in the next year or two (if I can make room on my desk).

I suppose the only thing I want to know is if anyone has any info, experience, or educated guesses on how these new 3GB 580s run compared to the normal 580s or 590. I wouldn't expect improved performance unless the game is actually pushing past the 1.5GB mark anyway. But it's a new card, so I don't expect there is much info out yet. It would just be a thought to get in order to future proof a new computer.

for res of 2560 x 1600, if you want high aa settings tehn teh vram will help, 2GB is enough, otherwise the vram won't matter much unless you play games like gta that use lot of vram. Other then that, you won't notice any difference between the vram versions.

the 590 still works with 1.5GB of vram, not 3GB.

you'd be surprised... your better off getting sli than the 590. sli has come much further than dual gpu cards and dual gpu cards are basically for companies to say they are better than one another. I haven't found a game that pushes 2gb and i have a 6970. but there are some that get above 1.5 so in that way yes it would be helpful. But depends on how much it will cost, i mean $100 for 1.5gb more isn't worth it (to me) but depends how tight you are on money.
