What do you recommend?

My old r/w is truly ancient from the mid-90's and only handles CD's. (It makes a nice paperweight.) I know I paid several hundred for it, but I doubt I need to spend that much today.

Seems to use a weird double-USB port connection, one for power and the other for data transfer. Never heard of this before.

The DVD RW needs more power than a single USB port can supply. Some external drives have a small power supply that needs to plug into the wall but most just use another USB slot. Just remember to use a powered hub if you use a hub, otherwise it won't spin up.
 
Remember when a video card didn't need a power dongle? Same idea Smile
