Any of you folks use external hardrives? Are they reliable? Which are the better brands?

I like to use 2.5" / portable hard drives because they don't require a AC adapter and they consume less space. I don't really buy a particular brand because most portable hard drives are 5400 RPM. Instead I buy an external enclosure and add a Hitachi or Seagate retail 2.5" 500GB or 750GB 7200 RPM hard drive.

I always run a SMART test before I start transferring files to them. I make sure they are in good health before I start using them. If they are in bad health, I go back to the store and exchange for a new one, which rarely happens.

As for buying any 3.5" external hard drives, I would recommend doing the SMART test before you start using them to prevent data loss in the future. I think personally, if you want reliability, you should go buy them at a computer store and sure you do the SMART test. They buy in bulk, so they handle the shipping for carefully than if you were to order it online.

As mentioned its best you go buy your own external enclosure and add your own hdd, if you get a good enclouser, it will support both 3.5" and 2.5".

most of the drives are good but you can't tell when or if a drive goes bad, they can pass tests with flying colors but die a month later, tho a smart test maybe able to tell if your drive is not in a great condition at that time, but if it passes, it does not mean it won't die next month.

I like to clone(duplicate) my drives as backup.
