How would one go about stresstesting an external hard drive to insure that it will last for a few years? Would simply formating, saving massive amounts of files all at once, and formating again and repeating the process a few times over a period of 24 hours or longer show how reliable the hd will be over the years? I ask this because I recently just bought 2 and I want to know how I can make sure they're not lemons since I have important files I want to save on them.

There is no real way, it could pass the test and then fail next month.

no way to test it at all, keep multiple backups (hard copies) of sensitive data, thats how you keep it safe
