I've read that their's not much difference between the two and with vista it sometimes causes more harm than good, opinions?

It really depends on the person...

And yes Creative has pretty bad driver support for Vista =\

I need to undestand something here.  If your soundcard is doing it's job, why would one need to update a driver?  I could understand for compatability but there are so many drivers that surely you don't need to use more then half of them.

Weird, I thought sound was just sound and you didn't really have to update anything LOL hmmmm.

I swear on my older computer I didn't update any driver for sound, it worked perfectly fine to me.

Ya, you just update drivers for compatibility issues...

I know a lot of people who haven't touched their drivers since the day they got their pc =\

Onboard sound will less likely to have problems since it doesn't have a DSP or any special audio features.  The Realtek audio built-in doesn't sound as good as the stand alone sound card however. I haven't had any problems with the Extreme gamer on my Vista PC so far.
