Topic: Feedback on Lumos build! Posted: 24 Feb 2019 at 10:43pm |
I would welcome any feedback on this Lumos build! It is pretty pricey, which is fine but in a perfect world I would like to keep it between $3600-$3800. I am planning on just gaming, nothing else.
More specific questions: Is it worth upgrading to this motherboard instead of just the default Lumos one? Is the OS boost worth it? Noise suppression worth it? Probably don't need 850w power supply, could possibly go to 750w. TIA for any feedback! Hi Pherzhus, That is a very nice system and the strongest video card out right now. As you suspect, the Noise Suppression Package is not needed, nor is the OS Boost. I would also suggest that you change the Storage Set 1 to a NVM Express. The one you have listed is a SATA drive and the faster NVM Express is PCIE (the M.2 is just the form factor). The configuration gurus will chime in with more comments/suggestions. Enjoy.

Welcome to the forum Pherzhus!
Hose has given his usual excellent advice here...like he said skip noise suppression and OS boost...not necessary at all. Definitely replace drive1 with a m.2 NVME Samsung Evo 970 1tb....much faster. Solid cpu, Asus Strix mobo, Corsair RAM and PSU. I would suggest you switch to the more solid Corsair 240mm or 280mm AIO cooler, as it offers a longer warranty than the DS model. While you are at it, I’d suggest at least a free Stage 1 overclock on the excellent i7-9700k cpu as K processors are made to be overclocked, and you do have the cooling. Very strong build! Haven’t yet seen pics of a Lumos using the Thermaltake Riing RGB fans...so do share pics when this rig gets there. Edited by HockeyBuck - 25 Feb 2019 at 1:50am |

+1
I think the longer warranties are worth the investment. The OS "boost" used to be a thing when we had just one or two GB of RAM, and Windows took a bunch. No issue at 16 GB. |

Thanks for the feedback!
- Changed SSD per recommendation - Changed cooling to Corsair 240mm - Removed OS boost and noise suppression - Added stage 1 overclock (this makes me nervous but I guess it shouldn't? How important is it?) Would love some feedback on the fan choices, I am definitely leaning toward the Corsair LL RBG (Software), the Thermaltake Riing ones apparently have garbage software. HockeyBuck, you can see the Riing ones in action this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nsr3KvbCAHw |

Good changes you have made...strong build!
Getting the most performance out of the extra $$ you spend for any Intel K class cpu means running it overclocked all the time...not just when turbo kicks in and out. They are designed for the extra load, and your dependable Corsair AIO 240mm cooler will keep cpu temps nice and chilly. No worries there. My recent Lumos build for my son has the Corsair LL fans, and air performance is excellent...while the RGB effects from two rings of addressable RGB led’s are pretty wild. The iCue software seems very easy to use, and controls your RGB ram plus Corsair RGB keyboard or mouse you may have. |
