    Posted: 06 Nov 2011 at 4:18pm
Hi guys, I would really appreciate any feedback on the following proposed build.  Lots of questions below.

A few things to keep in mind:
  • Budget: ~3000$ USD
  • Usage: 100% gaming (own second productivity box)
  • Peripherals: all pre-existing
  • Notes:
    • 1000W PSU is to support eventual upgrade to SLI (additional GPU will be purchased later)
Some specific questions:
  • Is water cooling worth the additional 250$?
I did another identical build but replaced the Sub-zero cooling option with the Noctua NH-D14.  It appears the Noctua would essentially have the same overclocking potential as the Sub-zero, is this true?  If so, what is the real advantage of the Sub-zero here?  Just aesthetics?

My biggest fear with water cooling is long term reliability.  I couldn't find any details on the fail safe mechanisms the DS custom solutions have in place.  What happens in case of crimped tube or pump failure?

For the Assassin, the Sub-zero looks like the only option employing metal hose clamps.  As a novice, metal inspires much more confidence over plastic.  Is there a noticeable  difference in build quality between the Sub-zero and other solutions or this really just aesthetic?  Does anyone know the actual part numbers used in the various solutions?
  • Is 120G enough for now?
The model I've been following with all my boxes is a fast local RAID1+0 and then a large media/data RAID1 NAS.  Eventually I will add 3x120G drives to give me a single ~240G volume.

This will be my first Win build since '95.  How many games can I realistically expect to have installed at any given time?  I do have a separate productivity box but Win 7 Pro itself apparently eats up a whopping  20GB.
  • 1.5G vs. 3G of GPU memory?
My target displays are a 2056x1600 30" LCD and 1920x1080 59" plasma.  From my understanding, the 2056x1600 resolution can affect the required amount of GPU memory.  Is this really something to be concerned about?

My target games are largely MMO RPGs (WoW and Star Wars TOR).  Will these types of games benefit substantially from an upgrade in GPU memory?
  • Build time?
I know we are getting into the Holiday season so I'm not sure what to realistically expert in terms of build time.  Does DS post the current lead time anywhere?

give me the ticket number for that build.

proper lc system (stage 4 or higher) will give you better load temps, but for stage 1 and 2 oc here the air coolers do a great job, lc is more of a luxury or for benchmarkers.

if a pump fails you will over heat and system will shutdown.

assassin is small and not the best choice for lc system at all.

every time you add a drive to raid that means a fresh install of os.

you can just add drives (ssds) on their own separately and install games on there, no need for raid.

how many games will fit depends on your games's sizes, but I would only put the ones on there I'm playing now.

for games like wow sli will not help with anything.

with that oc you will need to get a new cpu next year, and DS only gives you a 1 year part warranty.

the fan upgrade/os boost and gpu oc are all a waste and bring nothing to the table, well the fan upgrade brings lot of noise to the table.

your build needs lot of changing, give me the ticket number and I will do it for you.
