I'm planning to order a system within the next couple weeks (698980) and I would appreciate advice on GPU memory.  I'm debating the GTX 680 2gb v. 4gb.  I hope to run 2 monitors at some point and system is primarily for gaming.  I want fastest FPS.  I also may upgrade to SLI at some point.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks!

For $138 more swap the single gtx 680 for sli gtx670 for the 24" monitors you mentioned before, I believe, and you're there.     For dual monitor you will not max out all games but mmo should be fine.        I think 5 year labor/ 3 year parts warranty is the way to go. One year parts goes by pretty quick.

If I am not mistaken, however, the parts warranty only really matters when the actual warranty on the parts themselves would expire before the manufacturer warranty. For example, if you get an Intel 520 SSD, and you have a one year parts warranty with DS, it shouldn't matter for that part, because DS can replace it for almost nothing anyway, because the SSD has a five year warranty. The hardware warranty generally only matters for parts that are not guaranteed by the company.

I do have a question for Alex, though. I noticed about a week ago that there are two rounded areas on my screen where the pixels are discolored, and I can feel a divot in the screen in each of those areas. I got my computer about 2 months ago, and I was wondering if that was covered or not. Also, if you could tell me if the above paragraph is correct, it would be appreciated.

I'm going to outline our warranty details and LCD policy below from our warranty details page on our website (http://www.digitalstormonline.com/warranty.asp):

Depending on the term of the limited warranty, the coverage of labor and parts will vary. Please review the breakdown below:

The "Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty" covers labor costs for 3 years and direct defective part replacement service directly from Digital Storm's inventory for 1 year. After the first year, Digital Storm will help replace any defective parts for the customer as long as those parts are still under warranty with the manufacture. Certain components are covered usually from 3-5 years from the manufacture. The "Life-time Expert Customer Care with 4 Year Limited Warranty" covers labor costs for 4 years and direct defective part replacement service directly from Digital Storm's inventory for 2 years. After the second year, Digital Storm will help replace any defective parts for the customer as long as those parts are still under warranty with the manufacture. Certain components are covered usually from 3-5 years from the manufacture. The "Life-time Expert Customer Care with 5 Year Limited Warranty" covers labor costs for 5 years and direct defective part replacement service directly from Digital Storm's inventory for 3 years. After the third year, Digital Storm will help replace any defective parts for the customer as long as those parts are still under warranty with the manufacture. Certain components are covered usually from 3-5 years from the manufacture.

and

E. DEAD PIXEL POLICY.

Since Digital Storm does not directly manufacture LCD panels for our monitors or laptops, we are going to pass over the same warranty terms that Digital Storm has with the manfactuer(s) to the customer. If any of the three conditions are met or exceeded, Digital Storm will replace the unit for the customer:

  1. Over 3 bright dots or 6 black dots or 8 mixed bright and block dots in total.

  2. 2 adjacent bright dots or 2 adjacent black dots.

  3. 3 bright and/or black dots within an area radius of 7.5mm

Thanks, Alex. I only think it affects about 140 or so pixels, but it is just kind of awkward, and I think I have OCD, because I cannot stop staring at those spots.

@bprat22 - Thanks for the advice.  Would you mind expanding a bit?  Especially the 2gb v. 4gb point.  Why is it better to go to 670SLI now v. starting with 680 and getting another later?

I appreciate all the help so far!

Hi blancc....It's all economics and trying to save you some $$$. Big%20Smile

For another $138 now you could change the the single gtx 680 4GB for sli, 2x 670 2GB and not worry about adding another card later for $500-600.  That's for the 2GB vram version of the 670.  If you changed to 670 4GB  versions then the savings is less because DS charges more to go 4GB with the 670 than 680 but you'd still save a few hundred.  For a single 24" monitor, the sli 670 will give you almost the same performance as sli 680's for alot less, and the difference in fps you wouldn't see.

The 4Gb card is most helpful, and that is debateable,  with a higher resolution like the 30" at 2560x1600.  For the 24" it might still help but not by as much if any.

If its in the budget and you go dual monitor then the 680's might be the way to go.  The 680's are only about 5-10% better in fps but if you game with BF3, Metro and other demanding games that little extra might be welcome with a dual monitor setup.

It really comes down to what you can afford and what monitors and games you want to play.
