Thanks to the great guide that !ender put together and all the useful information in this forum, I have come up with what I think is a solid build (~$2000 budget).  I am upgrading from a 6 year old Dell XPS and would like this machine to last about that long as well.  I can do basic upgrades down the road myself (Video Card, Sound Card, RAM).

  • I plan on getting one (maybe two) Dell U2410 monitors which are 1920 X 1200 (I am keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get any with the tinting issue)
  • I will use this PC equally for Business apps/Browsing, gaming, and photo editing

I have a few additional questions and wouldn't mind some input to be sure I haven't missed anything.:

  1. I opted for the 80 GB SSD over the 40 GB due to the photo editing need.  Even with Photoshop installed on the SSD, the picture catalogs have to be on the 1 TB HD since I will have a over 100 GB of pictures.  So, will SSD still speed up my photo editing workflow even with the catalogs on the 1 TB HD?
  2. If I am looking for longevity and low noise, how much will the Video over clocking harm this?
  3. Does anyone know if the GTX 470 comes with a DVI to VGA adapter?
  4. Does anyone know what the ram configuration would be. I want to be sure there are open slots for future expansion one day

general production would be faster, but if you really want to see the gains you would want to move the files you were working with to the ssd

a lot, stay away from it. you can use MSI afterburner to overclock only when you want to, thats very advisable ESPECIALLY if noise bothers you

Does anyone know if the GTX 470 comes with a DVI to VGA adapter?
GAH! vga? why on earth would you want that?

ram takes up 3 of 6 slots, 12 is pretty.. rediculous though, i wouldnt worry about that

OK, makes sense.  I can edit new photos on the SSO and then move the photos to the 1TB for long term storage.
