Hey guys,

Well its been around 24 hours since my computer arrived here. I didnt get to fiddle with it too much last night because i was busy installing all my various games i wanted to play today and of course, anti virus software and various utility software to make sure she continues running well.

It arrived in good condition, no major damage to the box that i could make out. Just the usual scraps and scuffs on the side of the box you get when you ship something. The box was HUGE, about the size of a smaller desk i have in my room. The computer came wrapped in a plastic sheet as well as foam packing all around the computer. The fit was nice and snug to prevent as much movement as possible.

The Cosmos S usually comes with a cloth sack around it when you buy it retail. I dont know if DS gets that well, but it was not included in my case. No biggie really, i just cover it with the plastic sheet it came in at night when i power it down to keep the dust off it.

As always when you first get a new computer shipped to you, you pop it open and take a look inside to make sure nothing had pryed loose during the shipping. As you can see in the picture below nothing major had come loose, except for the AC freezer pro fan. It only snapped on to the heatsink so the fix for that took all of 5 seconds to snap it back on. The wiring job was excellent as you can see, very little clutter. You can also see the size of the Cosmos S, as the mobo is the 790i ultra yet it looks dwarfed from within the case.

I ordered stage 3 air cooling which means the case is stuffed with fans. Intrestingly I had no idea that the fans ordered in stage 3 would be the lighted kind. The case comes with 1 red lighted fan in the front, all the fans DS added are blue. Making a sort of intresting red/blue color clash with the lower half of the case red and the upper half blue. At first I didnt like that too much, but its starting to grow on me. I ordered no cold cathode lighting and if i did the case would shine WAY too bright for my tastes as i like to play in the dark. Here is quick top down look at the extra fans glowing their blueishness. My toes are an bonus for this shot, im not skilled at taking pictures apparently and my old photoshop software from my old computer does not work with V64..so no cropping right now haha.

One last shot of the whole get up. Yes i know my speakers suck, they are next on the replace list. Im still not sure where to put this computer. Its too big for the drawer, and honestly it never would of went in there in the first place...what would be the point of stage 3 air cooling if im just gonna kill the airflow to it.

Also note that I did end up with a Zotac 9800GX2. So no step up for me! I blame myself for not requesting an EVGA graphic card. So if you plan to buy make SURE you request EVGA if you want to use the step up program. The 9800GX2 ran crysis very well for the 2 hours i got to play it with. No major slow downs, and no freeze ups which i heard were common with the 790i mobo. Only bad part is that trying to start up Ntune will BSOD the computer everytime. No solution to that yet other then uninstalling Ntune and leaving it alone lol.

Some notes:
Core temp reads my CPU at 47C and 38C respectively with a non overclocked E8500 and a room temp of 80 degrees (HOT ROOM!)

Of the 7 total fans on the computer 6 are blowing air into the case with 1 blowing it out. I dunno if that is good or not or really has any effect. From what i can tell all 3 top fans are blowing air into the case, which seems wrong, warm air rises, so itd probably be better if they were blowing out.

Vista is really Fing confusing at first when you been using XP for the past 5 years.

Anyways ill give a better review after a month of using this computer, after which i plan to overclock the CPU and memory. Take this as my first impressions.

Nice looking beast, the case is very nice, but you are quite right that it is completely massive, assuming that is a full size desk that is one monstrous case :)

Very, very nice!

Questions:

1) The 790i Ultra that you've got, is it EVGA or XFX or some other brand?

2) What RAM did you choose? Brand and speed?

3) What is the height of the case?

Also, that monitor is 24", right? If so (or even if it is 22"), you cannot sit so close to it!!! You will ruin your eyesight in no time. Trust me, I speak from experience. Unhappy

Its an XFX Mobo and I choose 2GB of 1333 Corsair, namely because i wasnt sure which to go for. I plan in a few months from now into 2x2 of 1600.

The case is 23 1/2 inches tall and 25 inches long.

The monitor isnt a 24inch its a 27.5 inch hehehe.

I planned this rig for upgrades. Within a year my graphic card will be replaced with either dual GTX 280s or just a single one. My bad for not getting EVGA, but I dont mind too much, gives me a chance to gift away the 98GX2. Like i said before probably a month or two before the ram is switched out with 4GB of faster.

One thing i will note though is that stage 3 air cooling is louder then i thought itd be. I knew itd be louder then my old 1 fan computer but its definally a noise youll notice. During hardcore gaming though you drown it out. Over time too I expect to just drown it out and not even notice it.

Another note is one of the hard drives has a slight raddle to it when its active, not a fault of DS though its a common annoyance with the Cosmos S, but its not very loud.

sunfighter if i were you i would do some more extensive checking on the fan directions, its likely, if your initial scan was correct, that the system is being choked and could easily run a lot cooler

are you planning on overclocking yourself? just curious why stage 3 air with no OC

yea i plan to overclock myself. Ive double checked with some string...all the fans except for the back one are blowing into the case. The back one and the power supply fan (which really doesnt count) are blowing out.  I would of figured the top 3 fans would be blowing out considering warm air rises. But who knows, maybe its designed to have air coming in 3 ways and out 1 way.

Though like you said maybe maybe the airflow is being choaked considering all that air coming in only has one fan to blow it out.

Though I did run into a major problem tonight. Playing Crysis on Assault the graphic card totally crapped out and was artifacting all over the place, completely unplayable as 2/3s to all the screen was full of nothing but artificacts. Though this was after playing for 5 hours straight. So ill try to reload it after i get home from work tomorrow and see if it continues to do it on that level with a fresh restart.

id be willing to put a lot of cash on that being crysis not software

and yes youre fans in the top of the case should be pointing up/out:
front, side = in
top, rear = out

should be a relatively easy fix judging from what i have seen of this case

Yeah ill give them a flip this weekend and see if it has any major impact on the system. Though i was pretty impressed with the cooling already, considering the room the computer was in peaked at 81 degrees this afternoon and core temp was still hovering upper 30's C for Core 2 and mid to upper 40s C for core 1.

Oh, ill add the the artifacting when away with a fresh restart. Computer probably just got tired after 5 hours of crysis on high. Kinda figured the video cards might of been overheating due to the room being 80+ at the time too.

By the way anybody have a good program for monitoring the GPU temperature? N tune just outright BSOD my computer everytime i try to open it.

Im actually not too impressed with it. Though im not certain it could be the ram since its only 2GB, but Crysis is all but unplayable at high settings in id say almost 75% of the game. 1200x1000 something rez. Every other game its great. Im downloading vantage right now just to make sure its actually working right, i swear it almost feels like its running off one card. Its set to dual run, but its definally not near the performance i thought itd give.

The FPS fluctuates badly it will be running 30+ one second then the screen will freeze for about 3-4 seconds and the FPS drops to about 4-5 for 10 seconds then shoots back up...The problem goes away on medium settings though, which leads me to the cards and its limited memory.

From what we seen with Crysis, if you want to enjoy that game on high with a large display:

Have a processor overclocked to at least 4.0GHz
Run two GTX 280's in SLI

I do want to mention, the difference in graphic settings during game play are very minimal between high and medium visual settings.

Warm Regards,
Alex

I am going to be the proud owner of a 780 gtx 2x SLI with 8 gigs of memory  and a non overclocked 2.66 Ghz Q9450 quad core, I hope to try Crysis  probably will ask for the game as a birthday gift in August, I will let you know what sort of FPS I get on medium and high, that should give you all an idea the difference between the gx2 and dual gtx

id say crysis is the single worst tool in the known world to benchmark with... not only does "very high" do little to nothing visually, its an exponential load on your computer

Here is hopefully a link to the vantage score. Seems alright system wise considering it isnt overclocked yet. Kinda low in the similiar systems rating..but oh well thats not important.

Whats the safe operating temp for a 98GX2 btw? it runs at 72C no OC, and with a 630 core overclock (600 base) it kicked up to 83C. 650 core (linked memory) brings it to about 88C under load.

Sorry to bump this, I never really got an answer to the safe operating temps for a GX2, the net isnt very nice either as the numbers vary badly.

But thats not what im bumping for. Im gonna be buying 2x2GB of 1600 ram at the end of this week. I know chances are slim, but im curious to see if anybody is intrested in 2GB of 2x1 1333 ram. Not for money or anything..im thinking I might just give it away, but the problem here is im not sure anybody would want it, as few people have DDR3, and 2x1 GB of 1333 has fairly limited use unless you already have 2GB of it and dont mind doing 4x1. But yea, if anybody would be intrested just post here.

Just an opinion Sunfighter, but with the inconsistencies in the quality of manufacture with RAM modules and other pieces of hardware, it never hurts to have a backup set of RAM.... just in case. It's very nice to offer up the RAM, but tucking it away on the offhand chance your shiny new DDR3 1600 dies an early death wouldn't be the worst plan.

Sun, the temperatures seem fine with wither similar configurations.

Unless you are having stability/artifact issues, enjoy the system. If the cards were running too hot, they would automatically shut off.

Do you want it with the GFX at stock levels or with it overclocked? Plus i havent overclocked the CPU yet, but im pretty sure with the temps its at now, i could at least get 4..if not i really dont care, the system is fine now as is. Id be doing it just to play.

Alex, I did have an artifact issue with Crysis, but that was only after 5 hours of non stop play. It worked fine after i started up the next day after work. So i assumed it was the GPU overheating. Which really isnt a big deal, ill rarely play crysis for 5 hours again.

As to the ram, I still am considering giving it away, Though I did forget to mention that thatd be only after i made sure the other ram worked okay. Like a week after i get it or so.

Looks the GPU did a bit better this time. I know i can get it up to 9600 though via OCing. Looks like the CPU still hurts the total a bit though.
