I've got a four year old XM15 that I love dearly. However, it's getting to the point where I'm unable to even run the latest games sometimes. I'm graduating high school and it seems to be a good a time as any to upgrade to a more capable and upgrade able machine.

Also, I was wondering: Would it be better to get two GTX 770's or one GTX 780 and upgrade to SLI in the future? And is the difference between the GTX 780, the GTX 780 TI and the GTX 780 (EVGA Superclocked ACX Cooler Edition) worth the difference in price?

Windows 7 or 8? I'm used to seven and my screen wont be touch enabled... Which OS is better with gaming performance?

Budget:
I'd like to keep it as close to 2K as possible.

Expectations:
I would love to be able to run most games out today at 2560X1080. I don't really do a whole lot of multitasking, but it would be nice to not have to close out of everything to get any kind of gaming performance.

Usage:
Gaming, media (music and movies), some recording and some light programming.

Specifications:
MoBo: ASUS Gryphon Z87 (Intel Z87 Chipset) (MATX)
CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K 3.50 GHz (Unlocked quad core CPU)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 @1600MHz
PSU: 1000W SliverStone Strider Gold (ST1000-G)
HDD: 120GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD
Wireless Card: Wireless PCI-E Asus PCE-N53
GPU: GTX 780 3GB?
Cooling: 240mm Radiator Liquid CPU Cooler

Thanks!

Hi Bore-dome...     That's a nice build and my suggestion would be to keep the 780 Ti over a sli, 2x 770 setup.   The 780 ti texture fill rate and memory bandwidth is much higher than the 770 and would be very helpful with that 2560x1440 monitor.  The added vram, 3gb vs 2gb, is also helpful with the higher res gaming.

Always better to get the best single card solution over sli if it meets the needs.  Here's a link that compares the 780ti to sli, 2x 770.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1064?vs=1072

The sli 770 wins on some games but loses on others.     Nether will max out graphics in all games, so a few in game tweaks will keep the 780ti a great gaming experience.

By the time you might want more horsepower a new generation of stronger cards will be out and that will  probably be a better path for the future.

If you decide to keep it single card., both now with the 780 ti and later with new cards, you can save some money and drop to a 750-850 w psu.   Also with a sli setup, the Gryphon mobo can't take another card like the WiFi card,  listed above, but not in your config.   The 770/780's are double wide and would block all four Pcie slots.

The 780 ti is about 20% better than the 780 an worth it for this monitor.

Hope this helps and good luck. Big%20Smile

Ok.

I'll get the 780 TI and drop the power down to 850 Watts. Do you think the PCI-E Wifi card is worth it? Or should I just get a USB 3.0 dongle?

thanks!

You're welcome.  Big%20Smile

I never compared the internal card's performance  to a USB dongle, but the USB dongles work great, saves a slot on the mobo and can be moved to another pc, not that many would.   But internal card is out of the way.   My pick is a dongle but that's just me. Hahaha

Either work.

USB 3.0 bandwidth is more then what even the current top 802.11ac spec wifi can do.

Only thought is that Z97 will be officially released on May 11th. So it might be worth a wait. Though I don't know when the Gryphon Z97 will be generally available.

Here are links to the product pages for the Gryphon and Gene (Asus Micro-ATX Tuf and ROG motherboards):

If you're not planning to SLI and want to use a slot, I suggest ordering an AC-capable wireless adapter, like the ASUS PCE-AC66. I believe that it gets all its power from the PCI-E connector, so there are no power cables to deal with, making it fairly easy to install yourself.

There's no point sticking with 802.11N at this point, in my opinion.
