and alot has changed, ... Its been a while since I spec'd out a new PC - 6 years ago (alienware still working well, but feeling its age).
I game a little (Battlefield's, Eve, Total War) and work a little (just excel spreadsheets).
I would like a quiet system that will be competive for a few years. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I suggest a 1000W power supply.

that is quite a system for someone who games and works a "little"
everything looks good at first glace to me. i would say thought, that unless you have an attachment to the 950 case its not exactly my favorite. I believe you'll find the 750 to be quieter
boost up to vista 64, only way to see all that ram and will soon be the mainstream
i dropped to the 750 case because i think youll find it quieter and considerably less daunting in size
went to 500gb HDD, 180 gigs for $25
750W power will be enough
persoanlly, id suggest not getting that microsoft kb/mouse combo, there are much better things out there for reasonable prices. i always say that would be like putting civic tires on a lambo
same with the acer monitor, frankly. Edited by !ender_ - 06 Jul 2008 at 10:13pm |

I think that with your choice on graphics card, the 950 case is a better choice. It will help keep the card cooler and in the 750 case there is minimal support for cooling of graphics. Since the GTX 260 currently runs hot and noisy, any cooling assistance is gonna help with noise. The 950 case also lends itself well to aftermarket graphics cooling solutions. Even the inexpensive AC coolers may be sufficient here.
As for choosing vista 64, I agree with !ender's assessment. With 896 Mb of the graphics card and more for windows' needs, you likely will be down to 2GB of ram available with a 32 bit OS. |

I can tell you from experience, I own the 950 case myself, it is an amazing case, room galore and very quiet with the level II cooling option (The same option I selected.)
It does have the drawback like ender mentioned, it is HUGE. You need a big space to put it, but it is very quiet for me, I sit right next to the case, with the case at my chest level on my desk (I have a huge desk...) and I just hear a fan hum, no air woosh or anything like that. I run paired 9800GTX in my case, and that should be comparable in noise to the 260. so I think you will be happy. Again on this I agree whole heartedly with ender, the Acer monitor well... it would be one of my last choices. I am firmly of the opinion a monitor should be looked at in person before purchase, and I think Acer, while it is inexpensive is a poor choice for a good gaming monitor. I would look at Samsung, LG or even HP first... I would avoid Viewsonic and Dell... Sony too, but only because they are pricey when you can find them, and not any better than my top choice Samsung.
