Topic: First Time Gaming PC Build Posted: 02 Feb 2012 at 4:02pm |
I have been doing quite a bit of research and this is what I came up with.
I had read that it is better to go with one high end card now than SLI with lower end cards, is that true? Do you think Noise Reduction is worth the money? I have read it creates space for dust to hide. Budget: $4000 (prefer to be closer to $3500) Expectations: Be able to play BF3, Batman: Arkham City, SWTOR, and Witcher 2 on all high settings with no hiccups at 1900x1200. Usage: 90% Gaming, 8% Media, 2% Busy Work Special Needs: Recommendations on placement for ample air flow and cooling (considering how large this case is). I also got the 1200AX Power Supply because in the future I would like to upgrade to Quad-SLI with another GTX 590. Saved Ticket #: 650931 Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Black OPS HailStorm Edition Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe (Intel P67 Chipset) (New & Improved B3 Revision Without SATA 3G Issue) System Memory: 16GB DDR3 2133MHz Corsair Vengeance (High-Performance) Power Supply: 1200W Corsair Pro Gold Series (CMPSU-1200AX) (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (240GB Solid State (By: Corsair) (Model: Force GT Series CSSD-F240GBGT-BK) (SATA 6Gbps) Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital/Seagate/Hitachi/Samsung (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) Optical Drive 1: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Writer (Play Blu-Ray and Burn DVDs) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 3GB (PhysX) (EVGA Classified 03G-P3-1590-BR) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H100 Liquid CPU Cooler (240mm Radiator) (Extreme-Performance Edition) Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Blue) Boost Processor: Stage 2: Overclock CPU 4.5GHz to 4.8GHz (Requires Pro or Deluxe Series Motherboard) Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Thank you for any and all assistance!!! Hey Tim, welcome to the forum. Here are my thoughts:
1.) Best case to go with will be the HAF X 942. You will see that this is pretty much the most common and most recommended case on this forum and provides the best airflow.
2.) I would change the ram to digital storm brand as most people on the forum say that all ram is pretty much the same and the performance gains that more expensive ram provide are not noticable and not worth the extra price at all. 1600mhz of digital storm ram will not give you any noticable performance loss when changed from the 2133mhz corsair.
3.) I'd recommend the Intel 320 series SSD over the Corsair any day as the corsair had issues in the past. The intel is the way to go.
4.) Video Card: here is where the debate begins. You will see that on this forum, absolutely no one will recommend going with the GTX590 or any dual GPU card for that matter. All it is, is two GTX580's sandwiched together with their power heavily reduced so that the cards dont melt. As is, the card produces so much heat that the forum members will try to steer everyone against them. For your system, a pair of GTX570's in SLI will do the trick.
Also keep in mind and if I am wrong about this, someone will correct me, but I am pretty sure that the p67 platform is not capable of running anything more than two GPU's in SLI. So if you are thinking of adding another GPU down the road for tri-sli, you will need to go with the X79 platform and the 3930k chip.
5. For cooling, we would recommend staying away from stage 2 liquid cooling. If you want liquid cooling, you should step up to stage 4 or higher. Up until then, we would recommend sticking to stage 2 air cooling with the A70 or even better, the Noctua D14. Both of these coolers work just fine with an overclocked 2600k chip.
Dont go with the chassis upgrade. It adds smaller and very loud fans when there is no need for this upgrade if you go with the HAF X 942 case. This case has 4 very large fans with an additional optional fan that we recommend getting.
Let us know what you think

Thanks for the response!
I have some questions about your response. 1) I'm trying out some builds with that case! 2) Good to know! I figured the 533MHz difference would make everything a lot quicker. 3) If you can recall what type of issues does the Corsair have (just curious, answer not necessary)? Also, with the Intel SSDs is the difference from the Intel 320 Series to the Intel 510 Series worth the money? Is the 400MB/s that much faster? 4) Does SLI work with most games now? I had read that it is not fully supported by games yet. 5) Why would you stay away from the stage 2 liquid cooling? Is it not as efficient? Is the X79 platform a big performance gain from the P67? I had read that an overclocked 2600k is all someone would need for gaming. Saved Ticket #: 650966 Again thanks for the response and assistance! Edited by TIMoteo87 - 02 Feb 2012 at 5:38pm |

kane860 - I messed around with the config and I think you will like the one I came up with!
Ticket Number: 651014 Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master 942 HAF X Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe (Intel P67 Chipset) (New & Improved B3 Revision Without SATA 3G Issue) System Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1200W Corsair Pro Gold Series (CMPSU-1200AX) (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (250GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: 510 Series) (Extreme Performance) (Fast) Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital/Seagate/Hitachi/Samsung (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) Optical Drive 1: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Writer (Play Blu-Ray and Burn DVDs) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 3GB Classified Ultra (PhysX) (EVGA 03G-P3-1595-BR) Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 Extreme Performance Chassis Airflow: Upgrade Chassis With LED Performance Fans (Blue) (Up to 6 Fans) Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Blue) Boost Processor: Stage 2: Overclock CPU 4.5GHz to 4.8GHz (Requires Pro or Deluxe Series Motherboard) Boost Video Card: FREE: Yes, Overclock the video card(s) as much as possible with complete stability Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) I went with the Intel drive and read around on the forums and figured that eventually having 2 GTX 580 3GB Classified would work for what I need! Just realized the fan LED in the front of the case is red. I guess I will just have to go with red instead of blue LEDs for the rest. ^ DST is rolling in his sleep right now, get rid of the fans they will replace the bigger quiter fans up top and you will have a wierd combo of red and blue lights., and the video boost its not needed, and get 2 570's one 580 is nothing compared to two 570's, 1200w is a waste. go 1050w. and go with the 320, 510 isnt worth the extra price.

I fixed the lights once I realize the fan in the front was red (oops). I plan on getting another 580 once I have the money. I would imagine that two 580's would be much faster than two 570's. Then power supply wise (with the Classifieds overclocked) wouldn't I need the 1200w? Thanks for the information! |

Two 580's are indeed faster than 570's but not by much and certianly not worth the extra hundred dollars. the only reason you would ever need 1200w would be if you had tri sli 580's with x79, and you were watercooling everything even then i doubt you would fill 1200w, hell i doubt it would reach 1100. you'll be fine with 1050.

I got the build closer to the $3500, which is very nice!
See below and let me know if this could be the final build! Budget: $4000 (prefer to be closer to $3500) Expectations: Be able to play BF3, Batman: Arkham City, SWTOR, and Witcher 2 on all high settings with no hiccups at 1900x1200. Usage: 90% Gaming, 8% Media, 2% Busy Work Special Needs: Will the 850W Power Supply cover two GTX 580 Classified (which will be overclocked) or should I go with the 1050W? I went with the 510 Series Intel SSD because for around the same GB space size it is only like $10 more (other option would be two 160GB 320 Series). I dropped 16GB ram to 8GB...gaming can't use anymore than that. If you have need then just plug it back in. I put in 2 160GB 320 because you showed a needfor that storage....I like better than 510 series. Changed your 580 to sli 570's....sli 570 way better than single 580. At your resolution sli 570 will smoke the games with room to grow into new demands. 3GB gpu is overkill for that resolution. edit.....We do have a member that saw an increase in fps when upping his 570 to the 2.5 GB version on lower resoltion. Upped 850TX to 1050HX to power future sli needs. HX series has 7 year warranty, telling of its quality. A70 cooler is all you need, but the D14 is tops...just more $$$ for a slight performance advantage and a little quieter. But it is a great cooler for another $81. For your budget I just think the money toward sli 570 a better deal, but always your decision. Take a look and Have Fun Good Luck oops...I forgot your blue ray player. Minor tweek. bprat pretty much covered everything that I was just about to write. You definitely want to go with the 1050 PSU, absolute no doubt about that.
I also agree with the SSD's. The dual 160gb Intel 320 ssd's will be way better than the single 250gb intel 510 SSD.. you get much more space and trust me, on an SSD, every single gig of space is precious real estate. I went with the 120gb version and have regretted it since the space was going away so quickly... but then I simply corrected my situation by purchasing a second Intel 120gb SSD and I use that second one solely for gaming.
I agree with bprat about the A70. That IS really all you need but personally, I really love the Noctua D14 and if I was in your shoes, I would go for the Noctua... its a friggin beast and its quiet... excellent performance.
@bprat: If I remember correctly, I think he wanted to go with the 3gb version of the GTX580 because he was planning on upgrading his monitors and also adding a second GTX580 at some point.

Thanks kane...I didn't catch the added monitor needs. Plus the 580 is a great card just a little pricey.
Also.. we do have a forum member that's running present games like BF3, MW3, etc on ultra settings, smooth as silk with a single 580 3GB card. Also a forum member that saw a jump in fps when going from a 570 1.2Gb to a 570 2.5GB card on 1680 x ??? resolution I believe. So, nothing is cast in stone.. Either way, this rig rocks Hey kane860, between the two of us we might get this right, Edited by bprat22 - 03 Feb 2012 at 9:32am |

Thanks for the help!
I do plan on adding another monitor around 27" (kane860 is a mind reader) and also the second GTX 580 Classified down the road. I figured for now a single GTX 580 Classified (overclocked) would handle what I need and more on my 23" (1900x1200). I'm going with the Noctuna D14 because of the reduced noise and performance. Is 500Mb/s a lot faster in regular use than 220MB/s? That has been the main reason I have been going with the 510 Series Intel SSD. I also figured I might as well keep the 16GB of RAM instead of buying more later on (I tend to keep extra programs open while playing games). Below you will find the build with all taken into account! Ticket Number: 651147 Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master 942 HAF X Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe (Intel P67 Chipset) (New & Improved B3 Revision Without SATA 3G Issue) System Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1050W Corsair Pro Silver 1050HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 2x (160GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: 320 Series) Set 1 Raid Options: Configure HDD Set 1 to a Raid 0 Config - Stripe Performance (Requires Two HDDs) Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (Model: Black Edition) Optical Drive 1: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Writer (Play Blu-Ray and Burn DVDs) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 3GB Classified Ultra (PhysX) (EVGA 03G-P3-1595-BR) Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 Extreme Performance Chassis Airflow: Upgrade Chassis With LED Performance Fans (Red) (Up to 6 Fans) Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Red) Boost Processor: Stage 2: Overclock CPU 4.5GHz to 4.8GHz |

Im not sure about your question about the speeds about the 510 SSD so Ill let someone else reply to that.
But I did want to say one thing. The Noctua is very very large and it covers the RAM modules making it very difficult to add/replace the ram so I agree to go with the 16gb of ram now. I have heard a lot of folks mention that all you need to do is just remove the fans from the Noctua as they do clip on. But after looking at my system and the noctua, I can see how the right side fan comes off easily and exposing the right side ram modules, but the left side fan is actually sandwiched in between the metal heat sinks so I am not sure how that would come off and the left heat sink actually covers the left side ram modules so I am not exactly sure how it would be easy to access the left side of the ram modules if ever needed to get to it.

580 will definitly handle it
Don't know SSD speeds or raid 0 but my understanding, and I could be wrong, is if one raid 0 drive fails you lose all data between both. Not sure but good to check on. Noctua D14 is quieter which can make life more enjoyable Chassis upgrade fans add noise . Your call. Build looks good.

I'll have to do some more research on the SSD speeds and how they impact regular usage.
Have you heard any rumors about the release date of the new Nvidia cards (GTX 600 Series)? The consensus from what I have read is that it is not worth waiting for the new "just buy when you have the money and enjoy what you purchase." I just don't want to purchase this and a month later its the new cards. Both of you guys rock for helping me out! Now I will be making the purchase sooner than expected! |

I just edited my previous post with raid o info. Again, I could be wrong but good to check on first.
I don't know about the future nvidia gpu in April, maybe, but I'll bet their pretty good. You are right....there's always something new around the corner. Waiting can be an exercise in frustration. This rig is gonna rock for a long time.

HI TIMoteo87,
RAID O is a mistake if you value your data. bprat is correct that if you lose one drive you lose all of your data. It writes over both drives so if one fails you just have fragmented data on the remaining drive. RAID was conceived for HDD type drives for different applications. With the speed of the SSD you don't need a RAID setup especially for gaming. The Intel 510 is a sata 3 drive and the Intel 320 is a sata 2 drive. So on paper the 510 is faster over all. But the majority of reads are 4/8Kb and the 320 does very well with those small data transfers. The 510 shines when you are transferring large data files. A gamer won't notice any or very little difference between the 320 and the 510 in speed. The 510 has had a bunch of problems and the 320 is a tried and proven SSD. If you want two SSDs that is OK but use them as separate drives, not in RAID. If you drop the RAID and the performance fans your build looks good to me. The 580 3GB is overpriced for a 1920 x 1080 resolution. If it was me I would drop one of the SSD and get two 570 2.5 Gb GPUs. To add the led performance fans they remove 200mm fans and replace them with 120mm fans. They operate at a higher speed and produce more noise unless you down speed them. Stick with the factory fans. They move a lot of air and are quite. If you just got to have red led fans there are 200mm red fans available. Frank Edited by FrankW - 03 Feb 2012 at 3:06pm |

Frank
Thanks for the response! I was right in the middle of some research on the Intel 510 compared to 320 and am glad your response is in line with what I have been reading. I will prob go with a single 300GB Intel 320 (cost is fine and I wouldn't like having to deal with two smaller drives). I plan on buying a second 27" monitor so I'm a bit stubborn about the 580 card! I have removed the fan upgrade and will stick with the factory 200mm fans. Below you will find what I hope is the final build! Thanks for the assistance everyone! Tim, you have a real solid build. I understand on the 580s. You need to ask DS to add a second 200mm OEM fan to the top of your case ($30). Also ask them not to exceed a Vcore voltage of 1.4 with your OC. Make sure you ask for your free T-shirt.
Are you going to be gaming on two 27" monitors or gaming on one with another one for other stuff? Frank Edited by FrankW - 03 Feb 2012 at 3:50pm |

I would like to game on two 27" monitors.
Thanks for extra build tips! On that note, is there anything else in your experience that I should add (besides 200mm fan and Vcore voltage max at 1.4)? Edited by TIMoteo87 - 03 Feb 2012 at 4:21pm |

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if your gaming on two 27's that have a 1920x 1200 on both or even 1920x 1080 you'll have... 2500x 1200? I believe, anyway if your gaming on both then yours going to run into problems with just one 580, even two may not due it.
You will have to turn settings down, Also just a warning, because i have done it and i just want to let you know, when you game on two monitors and you play a fps. Not always but there is a chance that the game will be split meaning that the reticle will be split in the sides of the screen, and its very hard to shoot and be accurate, takes away from the enjoyment. Its also a bit wierd on racing games but not as much, Again just a warning, if you want to game on both I would move you to x79 and keep the 580 and then later down the road maybe a year or when you can, pop another two in there. Or you can wait for the 680's to come out, and if they are as powerful as rumors say, you may only need two to power both monitors. Edit- Another option that is plausible, is stick with p67 but wait for the 680's. that way you save a good 300 bucks from buying a 3930 and a x79 mobo Edited by Zieno - 03 Feb 2012 at 11:24pm |

Hi Tim,
Two 27" monitors changes things. If you are going to buy a another monitor the new 27" monitors are 2550x1440. I guess you could look around and find another 27" that has the 1920 but it will depend on when you look. You are going to complicate the hell out of your build if you plan on gaming across two 27" monitors. Some people do game on multiple monitors but to most, like Zieno, it is better to game on one monitor. I agree with Zineo that if I was going to game across two 27" monitors I would be looking at the X79 platform. It gives you the option of going Tri=SLI. I really like your present build but it won't support Tri-SLI correctly. It all comes down to the resolution of your monitors and if you are going to game across two monitors. Frank |

Not to get stuck in the middle of an ATI versus nVidia battle, kinda like Chevy vs Ford in the old days, here's what I just posted on another posting.....
"Just read a review at guru3D that HD 7970 crossfire (2 gpu ) hit 70 fps average with Crysis 2 at 2560x1600 res. Didn't mention monitor but probably 27-30". Just a FYI for whatever it's worth. That's the new ODE 4 config ." Just more to confuse you. |

Well you guys convinced me that I should stick to one monitor. Gaming on multiple monitors was not a priority for me, just an interesting idea.
bprat22 - I looked at the new ODE 4 build when I heard it had two 7970s in it. The new ODE 4 also has the X70 platform. But in this build I get a larger higher quality SSD and higher quality 2nd HD with 500GB more storage. I also get a better case for cooling and higher quality cooling with the Noctua. Is it worth the extra money currently to get the X79 platform instead? I will more than likely stick to a single card or Dual-SLI. Edited by TIMoteo87 - 04 Feb 2012 at 8:57am |
