    Posted: 25 Jun 2008 at 11:50am
So as many of you know i had 3 top fans on my Cosmos S that were blowing in. There was some debate on whether this was right or not. So today i finally found the time to flip them. to where they are blowing out. While i was doing this, one of the screws fell out and fell into the computer, amazingly it took me 25+ minutes to find it again, and this was after playing tip the case around and listen for the noise to try to pinpoint where the hell it was at.

Intrestingly i found another screw rolling around in there, this must of came off during shipping and i didnt notice. I quickly found where it went and put it back in...lol. I also noted that while Stage 3 air cooling says Zalman Fans, my 3 fans on top where in fact Cooler Master LED fans. Not a huge difference i suppose, though i will admit that the airflow coming from those fans was extremely weak, in fact it took me a while to figure out just what direction the fans were blowing in the first place as the air coming off them was very slow, even hovering my hand directly over them i had to concentrate to figure out which direction the air was going.

No problems flipping them, getting the side panels on the Cosmos S was another matter entirely, those are probably the hardest side panels to get on in the history of computers..What a pain in the butt, i spent more time with those then I did changing the fans..anyways finally accomplishing that, i plugged everything back in, turned on the computer, then to warm up the GPU I did a quick test with Vantage, then afterwards let the computer sit idle for 10 minutes to get a warmed up stable temp from the GPU.

Temps w/ fans blowing in: (all temps will be while idle)
CPU:
Core 1: 47-49C
Core 2: 37-39C

GPU: 71-73C

Now for the shocking conclusion: Temps w/ fans blowing out:

Ta-DA! no freaking difference what so ever.... Wooo!

Edit: sorry about the picture being so large, maybe you should get a higher resolution monitor. I cropped it but saved it under the same name, and you know what happens to links and photobucket, it loves to save the older picture even though it doesnt technically exist anymore

I doubt this is related, but ive had two BSODs today after exiting supreme commander, vista lists them both has Video card HARDWARE failures... I also updated the drivers just friday to the new ones.

Hopefully my video card isnt dying already. it was running upper 90's C under load....

Actually harley know that you talk about it, after spending about 25 minutes trying to get the side panel back on I did sorta kick the panel a few times to get it to get into place, maybe that knocked the card loose a bit, i dunno like i said ill check tomorrow. Intrestingly, i probably shouldnt of said that in case its the Zotac card failing hahaha....  ill be like....hey, i need this replaced, and they will go, no sorry we know you kicked it...

i have a feeling that, going off you saying the fans were weak, if there were stronger fans in place you would see a difference...
as ive never laid hands on one of those cases, i dont know which way i would face them, but out of curiousity... could you remove the fans completely and tell us the temps then? im going to assume it will be nothing.
again without seeing the case its hard to have much of a leg to stand on, all guesses

Ya i can do that actually pretty fast i believe, since the cords had extenders on them, i can just unplug them...give me like an hour or two...

also, as simple as it may sound, make sure you watch your multimeter, it takes mine a solid minute after logging in for my temps to settle... i only mention it because this test makes me very very curious

test done. As you can see....little to no difference with the fans disconnected. As i said before I warm up the card a bit first by giving it a quick run though Vantage, New Calico, performance run. I did take the screenshot a little earlier with this one, I waited like 10 minutes idle at the first picture, this one only a minute or two after, namely because the temps evened out.

Oh, I forgot to mention, i removed the CPU overclock for both tests, as you can see in this screenshot, i forgot to mention that earlier. I wanted to make this a clean non overclock test.

thats pretty much what i would have guessed, are you interested in trying to get better cooling for your case or was this all just for fun?

I'm as surprised as everyone else. I really felt that you would see a temperature increase with this swap. Maybe the case is so open that the top fan orientation just does not matter. If it's almost entirely mesh, I can see how it would be impossible to maintain any difference between case pressure and the room's air pressure. The real question is not idle temps though, it's load temps. This is where I am still curious.

Well i dont really like how warm the GPU is, 72C is a little above average, even for GX2's.

I did check something though, i had a hunch that at those temps the fans are probably kicking in a little bit to maintain a certain temp, and i made sure to check the idle fan speeds on the GPU. With the top fans off the GPU fans were running 48% with them on it runs at 45% to maintain that 70-73C range.

Honestly though as long as nothing is overheating im not too concerned about it, just more curious then anything. Though i may replace the top fans with something a little more powerful, you can bearly feel the air coming off them.

I may also have a chance before the end of July to get my grubby little hands on a half off QX9770, if thats the case then ill be replacing the CPU heatsink with a something with a little more beef. Was considering a vigor gaming Monsoon 2 thremo electric, but im not sure if it will fit around the 790i CPU socket.

if you are trying to squeeze in some extra cooling could you post a nice panel-off side shot of your case

i think those temps are a bit high too... and with my effort (or lack thereof lol) i dropped my cases idle and load temps by almost 10C! its worth looking into

Yeah I can do that tomorrow. I honestly dont see where to squeeze out extra airflow other then higher quality fans. It is a very open air case, add in the fact its so large there is almost nothing blocking the airflow.

The only thing that i can think of is that there is a small northbridge fan near the northbridge heatsink, I believe its blowing the hot air from the heatsink right onto the CPU, but the CPU temps arnt really that bad. Though if i got the fan direction mistaken, itd be blowing right onto the GPU....

For reference sake here is a link to the brand of the top 3 fans i have. If you read the first review you can see that the con is the airflow.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103022

Nope, the rest are zalman, cept for the 200MM that came with the case and the front 120MM red LED that also came with the case. Those both are obviously cooler master as well, but types i really dont know.

With that huge coolermaster case and ineffective top fans, I wouldn't expect to see much difference whatever direction they blow since the whole side is pretty much open and you have that massive side fan. I'm surprised you have heat issues with your graphics card with your case though.

I would expect to see the greatest difference if you had a liquid cooling system really. Seems like that case is primed for that. It has tons of room and a huge radiator can be placed on top.

Im starting to get nervous, the common freezing problem that happens a lot on 790 boards has happened to me twice in the past 2 days. Both times doing nothing in particular...in fact the last one was when i wasnt even at the computer, the system just went unstable on its own and froze up with only the desktop up. The other time was while watching a video (porn) on windows media player....

I DL new Drivers for the video card friday, starting to suspect that might be the problem.

cant point a finger at your hardware until it happens with no OC on. as much as these benchmark tests are all well and good, battle testing is the only real method... ie acually using the machine

Check later down in the thread, I tried the no fans last night, resulted in the same temps, the only difference was the GPUs auto fan was running at 48% with the top fans not running and 45% with them running, though thats well within a margin of error.

I think air flow is stupid. People like have a cordination of where the fans are blowing air, lol. Just put lots of fans and let it blow where ever. >_<
