Well it looks like the 390X will be launched June 24th...

http://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-r9-300-series-fiji-xt-release-date/

I know WCCF Tech is somewhat of a dubious source but this makes sense as best I can tell.  I'm excited to see how this stacks up vs. the Titan X and/or 980TI.  It looks like I'll be putting an order into DS just in time for the 4th of July!!

Yay - Bprat!!  Welcome back.

Actually you are correct - it's about time!!  It's taken all I could to hold off from buying and it looks like my venerable beast (well it was a beast in 2006) is starting to really show its age.  Hopefully, NVIDIA will push out the 980TI (which from rumors it may be they'll try to launch earlier to usurp AMD's press) and I'll get to see which of these two beast of a card I want.

It's going to be a good one. The rumors flying around from the more trusted sources are convinced NVIDIA will actually have something to worry about with this generation.

Seeing is believing in my opinion and I'm patiently waiting for the samples so we can begin testing.

I think next year will be the 'jump' with Pascal and HBM2 an the AMD cards.  However, if the rumor that just was floated out there is true, the R9 390X will be a beast by today's standards and alledgedly more powerful than Titan X.  However, take that with a huge spoonful of salt.  Here's 'performance numbers' through Chiphell (who are notoriously wrong)...

Well, it looks like the AMD top card is no longer going under the nomenclature of the R9 390X.  AMD's top two cards are the Radeon Fury X and the Radeon Fury.  The Fury X will be water cooled and is rumored to cost $849.  AMD is not allowing any AIB modifications for this card.  It is AMD's "Titan" brand it looks.  The Fury will allow AIB's to make modifications to the reference blower.  These are the Fiji cards.

The 390(X??) now becomes the Hawaii chip from AMD.  Thus it looks like AMD is structuring this like NVIDIA it appears with the Fury X = Titan X and the Fury = 980TI.  I'm curious to hear about these two new cards which are rumored to drop this month!!  What do people think of the renaming / rebranding strategy?

Edit more rumors on pricing / structure:

R9 380 4gb $199
-R9 390 8gb $299
-R9 390x 8gb $399
-Fiji pro 4gb hbm $599
-Fiji xt 4gb hbm $749
-Fiji xt /xtx 8gb hbm $849
-Fiji vr 2x8gb hbm $1399-$1499

Hahaha  I think the renaming is a smart move and brings in the people that  are moved by clever marketing.   Some of us will go by specs and benches, regardless of the name, but others are drawn by the name.  Must be a bragging rights thing.  The extreme popularity of the TITAN is a case in point.   Initially it was tops but even after if was equaled or even bettered, some just had to have a TITAN.   Big%20Smile

I agree bprat.  For people less informed, it probably helps move merchandise.  The Titan name is definitely along those lines and AMD is trying to take advantage of that (and also providing a 'call back' to its past history).  I just saw an article where they were saying that the Fury X (or Fiji xt/xtx above) performed slightly below the 980TI.  That said, I'm sure driver and bios tweaks prior to release will probably put it between the 980TI and the Titan X.  I'm really dying to see the benchmarks on this card as it's the only thing holding me up right now from ordering - lol.  Although, I also want to know if DS will be carrying any of the AIB 980TIs too!!

Dax.... My fingers are crossed that no more major hardware launches are announced anytime soon.    Although, your posts and research has kept us on our toes.

It looks like the announcement is the 16th but from what I'm reading, the cards will not be available until the 24th?  Well at least by then all the benchmarks and analytical comparisons to the 980TI / Titan X will be done...

That could very well be...it may be just a soft launch giving us specs and pics with the availability later on on the 24th.

I'm still hearing mixed things on the release date vs. launch.  That said, AMD better knock this one out of the park.  Their marketing rep has said that the Radeon Fury is the 'fastest card available' and I hope for everyone's sake they're right.  NVIDIA owning the market isn't a good thing for us consumers.  Competition is good!!

Well, rumor has it that there now will be 3 flavors of the Fury.  There is the Fury Nano; Fury XT and Fury Pro.  The first is probably the water cooled card I would think.  This does give AMD some pricing flexibility where they can use their top card as a halo type card like Titan X and then compete price wise with the 980Ti with at least one of these others.  I'm definitely dying to see performance numbers on this card...

It looks like the Fiji / Fury cards will be bundled with the Star Wars Battlefront game too.
