Anyone have any recommendations for a free drive imaging program? Something I can use to back up my primary drive to a second hard drive in the event my primary drive fails.

Hmmm... you can always use the built in backup utility in Windows 7 which I heard isn't bad at all.

Actually I can't (anymore). It won't let you save an image to a drive that it considers a system drive. If you install a program to your secondary drive that functions as a service in Win 7 (which I have), Windows sees that drive as a system drive for the purposes of Windows Backup. Very annoying.

Ah, I personally use Acronis TureImage Home. I don't know if they have a free version.

I use Macrium Reflect, which does HAVE a free version! The image file can be read by its rescue CD which supports a Linux or a BartPE boot, allowing you to restore if some crud happens on your rig's hard drive, or Macrium Reflect can also mount the image as a virtual hard drive on any machine with Macrium Reflect that has access to the image. The nice thing about that is what I'm able to do with my rig. I imaged it using Macrium Reflect before sending it out for a mobo swap, and I'm able to still pop open that image and access all my files on that hard drive using another computer with Macrium Reflect on it. Don't know if you can really put things on the image safely, haven't tried it yet, but at least you can still access your stuff.

Disk cloning is the process of copying the contents of one computer hard disk to another disk or to an "image" file. Often, the contents of the first disk are written to an image file as an intermediate step, and the second disk is loaded with the contents of the image. This procedure is also useful when moving to a larger capacity disk or to restore to a virgin installation.
