Topic: Future upgrade and GPU Cooling QuestionPosted: 07 Sep 2010 at 8:12pm |

Hi, I have a question regarding GPU cooling. Is there any easy to install and good GPU coolers available for the GTX 480 card? Also, in the future I hope to add another 480 card into my rig, should I opt for a higher power supply now or buy a new one when I upgrade? I placed the order last Friday and still in stage 1.
Thank you My configuration: System Configuration: |

For a second GTX 480 it is recommended to go with a 1000W PSU. Also, you won't need any GPU coolers with the chassis you selected.

good keep in mind that non liquid aftermarket gpu cooling tends to keep the warm air in your case, a wonderful idea since its usually aimed straight up at your processer.. the stock cooling on the fermis is plenty good
id probably go to a 1200w psu for 2 480s
dont by a new one when you upgrade or youll have to strip and redo the entire case AND have a PSU just sitting around

I see, then is it still possible to make the changes to my rig even though I'm already charged?? Also, can the dual 480s last for at least a few years without any after market cooling?

Yes its still possible to make changes to your rig. As long as you don't go trigger happy and overclock it to much there shouldn't be any problem for it to last at least a few years and if you don't mind the noise you can set the fan on manual to 100%, it will help to keep it cooler

goodman they definitely can, they are warmer than the market is used too, but they cool themselves well even without changing the fan, and better if you do use it, just a little extra racket at high load times

We can still make the changes. If we've already built your system (Stage 4 or Stage 5) then we will have to charge you a small re-build fee of $35 to take apart the system and another $35 to re-build it. |

I see, now I'm struggling if I should get the 2nd 480 now or wait a bit later and install it myself. But I'm not sure if I can do it on my own...

just keep in mind that if you install it yourself if wont be under warranty, at least not DSOs warranty.
and you probably wouldnt save too much money either
as far as installing it though.. its stupid easy, i mean.. if you can put a disk in a disk driver and screw in a 1/4 inch screw, youre most of the way there, the rest is just being careful.

Would two GTX480s do fine with regular HAF X cooling fans or would a liquid cooling / better fan system be required?

yea the cards pretty much cool themselves, as long as you have a cool air source and the hafx is open air and plenty of room for them to breathe in there. you never need liquid cooling it just does a better job than air cooling |
