Do you think that as time goes on GPUs will require bigger PSUs and more slots? For example, the 4870 X2 required, I believe 2 slots and something like a 650 W power supply. Will it be possible in the future to use such a card in 1 slot and with less power?

Most performance cards have dual slot coolers. However this might change in the future as AMD is developing a VCT solution for their cards.
As time goes on, the manufacturing process gets smaller so GPUs in the future will either use the same amount of power as they are now and be twice as powerful or use less power and be just as powerful. Every card today uses less than 300W. Most of them usually under 150W on max load. |

I think the power consumption will go down but when that is going to happen I'm not sure.

there has been some rumors/ideas that possibly in the future the GPU will be totally seperate from the computer(in a different case)
